A-Rod proves he's only human

Posted: Wednesday, May 30, 2007 11:47 AM

A-Rod went out on a date in Toronto, and if it helps his hitting, I’m sure every Yankee fan with the exception of his wife will be delighted. If it doesn’t, they’ll also be delighted, because nothing promotes the circulation like a salacious story about a superstar.

I’ve got mixed feelings on this one. The strongest is the customary feeling of delicious revulsion I get so often when reading what passes in The New York Post for front-page news. The other is something approaching empathy for the guy who was caught being human for one of the few times in his life. CONTINUED >>

Give Kobe what he wants

Posted: Monday, May 28, 2007 7:47 AM

According to ESPN, Kobe Bryant wants the Lakers to bring back Jerry West as general manager, and if they can’t do that, then Bryant wants to be traded.

If I’m Lakers owner Jerry Buss, I hire West. CONTINUED >>

Still Bossy: Steinbrenner spouts off, again

Posted: Friday, May 25, 2007 4:53 PM

Since when did George Steinbrenner become qualified to tell people when to shut up?

Mount St. Steinbrenner has been in a quiescent mode for several years, but he’s blown up often enough to have long ago lost the right to tell others when to speak and what to say.

Yet here he is sounding off on the state of his Yankees in an Associated Press story. Among other things, he throws a javelin at his DH, Jason Giambi. CONTINUED >>

Snooze on the Spurs, and you lose

Posted: Thursday, May 24, 2007 7:36 PM

When the Spurs finish off the Jazz and arrive in the NBA Finals, you’re going to see any number of columns whose 800-odd words can be reduced to one: “boring.”

And if Detroit comes out of the East, you’ll also read about how awful it’s going to be for the ratings, because, as everyone knows, the quality of the ratings is more important than the quality of the basketball.

This is neither true nor fair. Teams get to the finals because they’ve proved on the court that they’re the best. And only someone who believes style is more important than substance – I think that covers much of America – would say that’s boring. CONTINUED >>

Punishing Giambi won't help MLB's steroid war

Posted: Sunday, May 20, 2007 11:14 PM

Jason Giambi’s crime is being the only big name in baseball to give anything resembling an honest answer about steroid use, and for that, according to The New York Daily News, the Yankees are thinking about voiding his contract.

And people wonder why no players want to participate in the inquisition former Sen. George Mitchell is conducting for commissioner Bud Selig.

The death of cycling in U.S.

Posted: Friday, May 18, 2007 12:27 AM

Big-time American professional bike racing died Thursday. Cause of death was a massive loss of integrity. Blame Floyd Landis.

On Wednesday, three-time champion Greg LeMond revealed that Landis’ agent tried to blackmail LeMond. It was, as described by LeMond, incredibly crude and nasty.

Landis won last year’s Tour de France, the first person in eight years not named Lance Armstrong to wear the yellow jersey into Paris on the scandal-ridden race’s final day. But race officials said that Landis had tested positive for an excess of testosterone. A test of the back-up samples confirmed the initial test. CONTINUED >>

Earth to Bobby Bonds Jr.

Posted: Wednesday, May 16, 2007 12:01 PM

If I’m Barry Bonds’ brother, I’m probably going to defend him. That’s how it is with family. So I’m not surprised that his brother, Bobby Bonds Jr., is ticked at Hank Aaron for boycotting the assault on his home-run record, as reported by The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J.

But what I don’t understand is Bobby’s belief that the reason Aaron has to be present with Barry hits 756 is because he’s African-American.

“Being a black man going through what he went through in the past and not supporting my brother, it kind of makes me look at him like, ‘Are you serious, brother? Are you serious?’ ” he told the newspaper. CONTINUED >>

Three cheers for Bode!

Posted: Monday, May 14, 2007 10:56 AM

I hope Bode Miller is back on the World Cup ski tour next year as an independent contractor. And I hope he has more fun than everybody else on the tour combined.

A couple of days ago, he announced that he was quitting the U.S. Ski Team. His reason was typically honest: It’s no fun having to stay in hotels and follow a lot of rules. CONTINUED >>
