If Belichick spied, suspend him

Posted: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 10:23 AM

If Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick is found to have ordered the taping of Jets’ defensive signals against NFL rules, he’s a cheater. And if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell finds that is the case, Belichick should get the same penalty that players who cheat by using drugs get. He should be suspended for four games for what would be his first offense.

I don’t mean banned from the sidelines. I mean banned from any contact with the team, whether in person or via e-mail, instant messenger, overnight express, phone, carrier pigeon, semaphores or smoke signals.

That’s the rule for individuals who try to get an advantage by taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs. It’s only fair that it should be the rule for coaches who take illegal performance-enhancing videotapes.

In my last entry, I admit I grossly underplayed the incident. On Monday, I wrote that I didn’t think Belichick was involved in team employees taping the Jets’ defensive signals on the sidelines during Sunday’s game against the Jets. I didn’t put espionage past Belichick, but I felt that the method used was too crude and obvious to be his work. I thought he was too smart for such obvious method as standing on the sideline and pointing a camcorder at the Jets defensive coaches.

I was wrong. The NFL has determined that the Pats were taping the signals, a violation of NFL rules, and Belichick has issued a brief apology, although exactly what he is apologizing for isn’t clear. He blames the incident on his own misreading of league rules.

Commissioner Roger Goodell, who’s done little during his brief tenure other than put out forest fires, is reportedly extremely ticked off. He should be. The integrity of many sports is under attack, and the NFL is no exception. Fans want to know that what they’re seeing is legitimate. Stealing signals violates the trust of the fans as well as the basic rules of fair play and sportsmanship. And this incident makes you wonder what else Belichick has been doing during his extraordinary tenure in New England.

It’s not stealing signals that has propelled this past my threshold of moral outrage. Having a coach or employee watch the sidelines and attempt to decipher what they’re looking at is totally within the rules and part of the game. Even recording the action from a seat in the stands might be viewed as somewhat legitimate – you’re not seeing anything that game cameras and other fans can’t see.

But the rules specifically prohibit such taping on the sidelines, and that’s what the Patriots’ employees were doing, and from the apology and the statement, it was done with Belichick’s knowledge and most likely his blessing. With a tight zoom from that vantage point, you can read the play chart and link what you see with the calls being made.

There are ways to counter such espionage, as I wrote Monday. No team should be victimized by such tactics if they take simple precautions. But the action taken was a violation of league rules for the purpose of cheating – at least that’s the indication from Goodell’s office.

Belickick saying he misinterpreted the rules doesn’t wash. It’s the same as a player caught with tainted urine arguing that he didn’t know what was in that supplement he was taking. Ignorance is no excuse. Like players considering a supplement, it’s his obligation to call the league to see if what he wants to do is permitted.

Word is that Goodell is considering docking the Pats several draft choices. That would hurt, no question about it. But why have one set of rules for players and another for coaches? If Belichick cheated, let him suffer the same penalty as a player who does.

Give him four weeks of in-season vacation.

I agree completely. Especially as docking draft picks only affects the team next season, when Belichick might not even be with the organization anymore. If he is guilty of cheating, he should be punished as a cheater.
Better yet Why dosen't the owner step up to the plate and dock his pay and censure him.
I believe that Commissioner Roger Goodell should not only suspend Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick (without pay), but they should also:
1.  fine the Patriots
2.  take away 1st & 2nd round drafts for two years
3.  suspend / ban the Patriots from the playoffs.

Now I know this is a harsh penalty, but the commissioner should consider a combination if not all of the penalties.  Removing draft picks will not hurt this team.  The only way is to suspend the coach and ban them from the playoffs this year.
I think definately that Belichick should be suspended and fined. If the players are held to a zero tolerrance level, coaches should be held to the same standards.
Actually someone should be fired.  Robert Kraft should demand someone's job.  That's what happens in politics.  That's what would happen in my job if I got caught making stuff up or stealing, etc.  Whoever had the idea to cheat should be fired.  If no one is fired then we'll pretty much know it was the coach...he should be embarrassed.
How can it be clear at this point that N. E. won that game fair and square?  They should be made to forfeit the game along with any other penalties.  That would make 'coaches', who are the ones setting an example, learn a BIG lesson.
You're comparing apples and oranges. If your arguement is based on cheating, pass interfernce or holding is cheating also. Maybe we should give a four game suspension to anyone who gets a holding flag.
I think 4 weeks maybe a bit stiff...  2 weeks sounds about right.   No way he gets off with a slap on the wrist.
Absolutely Belichic should be suspended.  He is sending the wrong message to players, fans and everybody that looks up to the Patriots and Belichik

I am a serious Patriot fan but also a mother.  You can't teach people to cheat and survive in this world.  Our family values and morals mean more than the Superbowl Title!
Can I get an Amen!!
Recent suspensions for steriods (HGH) resulted in player and coach (Wade Wilson, QB coach at Dallas) suspensions.  What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
If this had been a first time offense, I would agree that suspending Belichick would be enough.  This is the equivelant of playing poker with a marked deck of cards.  Maybe this is the reason that the Patriots are able to rotate players in and out every year with no dropoff in play.

To nip this activity in the bud, the Pats must forfeit their game against the Jets.  The penalty must be sufficient to discourage any other NFL team from even considering this option.
Send him home for 4 weeks!
i agree, i personally tom brady or not that its to much a coincidence that a franchise that was known for losing outright all of a sudden finds it in them to win so many superbowls i'm glad that they got caught with there hands in the cookie jar!
thats right!  take out all your silly frustrations from our dominence!  you sound like an ex-wife talking about her past relationship.  Grow up. Pats, Indy, Cinci, Jets all cheat like this... Pats just got caught. Thats the difference! Get off the soap box!
Not only should Belichick be suspended, but the Pats should forfeit the game they just won against the Jets.  After all, the taping of the defensive signals could have led directly to their victory, and that also needs to be corrected for the Jets' sake.
Mike,

I agree that they were in the wrong but also think this is getting blown way out of proportion.  Clearly if they have been "stealing" signals for a long time then they haven't been very good at it.  It would be one thing if they had scoring 30 or 40 points every game but they haven't.  They have won no more games than the Colts the last 3 years so are we to now assume the Colts have been cheating as well?  I think everyone team knows that every team is doing it and the Patriots were just dumb enough to get caught.  I still have a hard time believing that they would be doing it so flagrantly as to have a guy with a shoulder mounted camera standing on the sidelines.  Something just doesn't jive.
I absolutely agree.  Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports says that Green Bay caught the Pats doing the same thing, so this isn't the first time.  I say 4 weeks suspension would be a good start.
Right on. And the team should have to give up the ill gotten gain as well...the win. Yes the Pats would have probably won that game even without the cheating but they might not have. As a very serious football fan I know that a single play can change the momentum and tempo of the game. Coaches should not be held to a weaker standard than players and I would argue they should be held to a higher standard because of the trust we place in them to keep the game and its outcome as fair as possible.
Suspend him? That's it? This is about as serious as a crime as it gets in a professional sports league. There will be no way to maintain the integrity of the NFL past a bunch of thugs betting and gambling on a weekly basis. If he knew or should have known that the Patriots were stealing signals, suspending him is way too light of a sentence.
Just another symptom of the depravity of professional sport and infernal desire to win at any cost.  Who, as a thinking human being, could even bother with sports like cycling, baseball and football  all of which have become the domain of drug users and cheaters?  For all the enobling characteristics sport can engender, it seems that, like our own political reality of the moment, to based in lies, deception and spin.
hey, if they cheates to win the game, then only a forfeit is just!!!
Wade got five games. The only reason I can think for the extra game is he's a coach. He is supposed to set the example, and should be punished harder than the players.

I see no difference here.
I agree! Belichick should be suspended for his flagrant disregard for league rules. He cheated and should be punished.
I don't think that Belichik should be suspended for the spying (although he should be suspended for the horrible "hoodie" look), but the Patriots should now have to forfeit the game. Maybe that kind of message should be sent from the commissioner's office.
To all you NY dominated media losers, as if NE had to cheat, give me a break pleaseeee, the NY Jets couldnt fight themselves out of a paper bag, maybe NE should replay it and break the rest of the teams legs, keep the draft picks. They are a pitiful franchise and N.E. will dominate the AFC east until you all die of old age.  Mangini is (A Rat)and not a genius,Usually rats dont last very long in NY.
Suspension won't do anything.  Its to easy in theis day and age for him to stay in contact with the team.  Make them forfiet 3 "W"s.  That will get everyones attention!
How about 5 games instead.
To paraphrase that famous line by Claude Rains in Casablanca, "I'm shocked, shocked to find cheating going on in professional sports."
Great idea.  Not only that but I would make the Patriots forfeit the game.  That would hurt.
I agree with you.  Is there a way that you can take a voting poll and get it to goodell?  It just might help him with his decision.  Thanks
The Patriots should forfeit the game with the Jets as penalty for cheating AND Belichek should be suspeneded as any other NFL employee would be if caught cheating. Kraft should be ashamed of himself for saying that other teams are jealous and they only want to bring down the Patriots...cheating is cheating no grey area the rules are written in black and white.
I have read elsewhere that is possibly the fourth time that the Pats have been 'caught" or "accused" in the past year.

Since Belichick is an employee I think that besides him being suspended if proven guilty the Pats should forfeit their win. That might get the attention of the Pats organization.
The real penalty would be to forfeit the game to the Jets.
I agree, he should be held accountable. Suspension would be ideal and also fine him. If players get fined for incidents off the field, this happened literally on the field. He should be docked a years pay. From the cry baby he is for his treatment of Mangini to the all time low he stooped for this incident. He's a bum.
Shouldn't the team forfit the game and their pay for the game. Put the money in the general player retirement fund.
This wasn't their first time as it was also reported to have happened in Green Bay as well.
I couldn't agree more.  Send the home for a month.
Agreed! Suspend him indefinitely as far as i'm concerned. Its a blight to the sport. Worse than doping.  Now we know where this so-called "genius" came from -- CHEATING.
Watch their past games...its like they "figure out" the opposition midway through the 3rd quarter. I say review their Super Bowl "victories" too!!!
I agree, Belichick is a creep.
I actually think he should get 5 games.  If the logic used to suspend Wade Wilson was that he got an extra game b/c it is worse for a coach to have HGH than it is for a player than the same should hold true here.
If you cheat, you have to sit out.  Take the lead from NASCAR and how they handle cheating with crew chiefs.
I'd give him a two year suspension and take away all draft picks for the next two years.  Plus a 1,000,000 fine.  And add a big old "*" next to all official NFL stats related to the team for whatever period it is revealed that they used such methods.  And return any and all trophies from that period to either the leauge or playoff/superbowl opponent.  That would make me feel better.
I think he should be suspended four games as well. Just because he wasnt taking a banned substance shouldnt allow him to do as he wishes; knowing they'll only lose a few draft picks if caught. I believe he knew this too. If the Cowboys can have their coach suspended for four games for a banned substance, does the NFL think he'll suit up or something, then a coach KNOWINGLY doing illegal activities ON THE FIELD should be suspended as well. In this case, the punishment wont even come close to the crime and the hit it will have on the "integrity of the game."
Please. Mangini coached for the Pats and probably stole THEIR signals. Why don't folks get THAT? Is there some rule that says when you leave one team for another, you leave your "signals" behind? They both coached the Pats AND Jets. Jesus - get over it.
I think this is more signficant and does not merit a simple analogy to, say, a player testing positive for HGH (for the first time, which warrants a suspension). In my mind Belichick (who's name is misspelled sometimes in the article) has committed a pretty grave offense -- one player can throw a play; a coach cheating to learn the playcalling of another team's defensive scheme, and to do it "mid-game", can do much more to determine an outcome. And allegedly, Belichick has done this for several seasons, even being caught (but not pursued) by the Green Bay Packers organization.
.
A simple 4-game punishment is not appropriate here. Is a lifetime ban? Probably overkill. However, I think an immediate, season-long suspension is commensurate with the *perception* (possibly, the very real) damage to the NFL and the Clubs on the receiving end of this blatant unfair and dishonest conduct.
.
If Goodell does not suspend Belechick, it shows that a 3-time Super Bowl Winning Coach will be handled differently than the "rank-and-file". But you've got to ask the next obvious question: Did Belechick win those Super Bowls -- or even get to the Super Bowl, after grueling AFC Championship Games -- only as a result of cheating??
He needs to be suspended... It's easy to have a good defense when you know where the ball is going.....
the pats no playoffs this year
Are you kidding me?

"Stealing signals violates the trust of the fans as well as the basic rules of fair play and sportsmanship."

The fans lost their trust in the games a long time ago.  This stuff goes on (and has gone on) for years.  Cheating is nothing new but the way teams do it these days is new.  Teams and players break the rules all the time.  But most don't get caught.  And you know what?  Many fans have given up caring about over paid whine bags cheating because even when they are caught, nothing of consequence happens to them.

Fairplay and Sportsmanship?  Those are pretty much gone in pro sports these days.  It's real sportsman like to throw a pitch at a guy's head or skate up behind a guy and give him a 2-handed cross-check that nearly seperates the head from the spinal column.  Yes sir..... real sportsmanlike.

Fine him.  Suspend him.  Will it really make a difference?  Not at all.  Oh Bill Belhichick might not try to steal signals again, but someone else will.  For all we know, Eric Mangini is sitting back having a good chuckle while he watches his own little videotape.

Cheating.  Mis-interpreting the rules.  Trying to get the advantage.  Call it what you want but it's not Sportsmanlike and in no way resemples fairplay.  But I guaranty it goes on much more than we know.
I agree Belickick should be suspended.  Taking away draft choices is one thing and with teams able to sign free-agents how big of an impact will that have?  Suspend him if he knew this was occurring.  Suspend all those on the Patriots coaching staff that knew this blatant act of unsportmanship was occurring.
How is this different than a baseball coach trying to steal the signs of the opponent's third base coach or a runner on second base trying to figure out the signals of the catcher to the pitcher?  So what?
Belickick's only mistake was that he got caught.  The NFL is simply a business and in the business world corporate spying is part of the game whether you like it or not.  With today's technology of nearly microscopic camera's that can be well hidden there is no excuse for any team to get caught gathering defensive plays of opponents.  Of course, the coach should be punished in a similar fashion as players and should be implemented quickly and severly.  But don't try to play this off as having anything to do with honor or integerity, it's just business.
