Not buying into the hype

Posted: Thursday, October 18, 2007 7:22 AM

Tiger Woods drives Buicks to golf tournaments, not because a Buick is the best car on earth, but because he’s paid millions of dollars to do so. He hits a Nike driver and wears Nike clothes – again, not because they’re the best on the planet, but because he gets tens of millions of dollars to do so. It’s the same with his watch and various other products.

And now, for at least the next five years, Tiger is going to be drinking Gatorade on the course. He had been thinking of drinking Vitamin Water, but he ultimately decided on Gatorade because he found that the $100 million that the company offered him is more refreshing than the $75 million that Golfweek magazine says Vitamin Water offered him.

What Gatorade also offered was his own brand – Gatorade Tiger. And the company is making quite a fuss about the fact that it analyzed Tiger’s sweat in concocting the drink and the great man himself then helped pick out the flavors – cherry blend, citrus blend and grape.

I like Gatorade. I always have, but if the company charges extra for Gatorade Tiger, I’m not drinking that variety. Even if I like it and the price is the same, I don’t know if I’ll drink it. I’ve got an aversion to buying things that famous people are paid absurd sums of money to use – just so I’ll want to buy them.

This desire to buy things just because somebody famous tells us to is beyond my understanding. I’ve never figured out the basketball shoe business. Why would I want to pay absurd amounts of money for a shoe just because Michael Jordan’s name is on it? If I’m a great basketball player, I’ll be a hero even if I’m wearing Florsheims. If I’m not a great player, the shoes aren’t going to make me play better.

But a lot of people don’t see it that way. Nike created an entire golf division by the simple expedient of signing Tiger Woods to an enormous contract, designing some products, putting them on Tiger and raking in the money.

I’m not saying none of their equipment is any good – the soft version of the Nike ball plays well. And I’m sure Nike golf shoes keep your feet from direct contact with the ground. But I can say that every time I see a guy with a Nike driver in his bag, I can almost guarantee you he can’t hit it.

I haven’t swung one, so I can’t give you an opinion on how good it is, but I have a friend who has one and, while he hits the ball decently enough with his other clubs, he can’t hit that driver a lick. I asked him why in the name of belly putters he had a Nike driver. He told me somebody gave it to him. I suggested that maybe that should be a sign unto him.

And guess what, wearing Nike shoes and shirts and caps won’t make you play like him, either. Nor will it make you look cool. It’ll just make you look like someone who values someone else’s identity more than you value your own. It’ll also prove that you have way too much money, because you can get all of that stuff a lot cheaper – and as good or better – if you stop worrying about the logo.

The truth is that the Nike driver Tiger hits is custom-built for him, not for you. So go ahead and buy a club so you can look like him, but don’t be surprised if you can’t play like him.

If you want to hit like the pros, you’d be a lot better off going to a tournament and looking at what all the players – the bulk of them on Tour – who you don’t often see on the leaderboard play. These guys don’t get big contracts to hit clubs and balls, so they choose the equipment that works best, not the stuff that Tiger plays.

The most popular driver on Tour is TaylorMade, and the most popular ball is the Titleist Pro V1. The reason for that is that those are the best of their kind.

Other balls are also good as are other drivers, but those are the ones chosen by the people who are best qualified to judge them – touring pros. And from my own experience as the proud owner of a TaylorMade driver, I have to agree with them. In fact, when Tiger was an amateur, that’s what he hit – TaylorMade and Titleist.

That should tell you something. Don’t buy products because a guy’s getting paid $100 million to use that product. Buy them because they work.

Mike,

You sound like an out of touch old fart. Welcome to America. It also sounds like you are mad that you are not making the 9 figure sum of moolah Tiger is reportedly going to get. The man is amazing I will certainly buy his products, he is an inspiration. Peace!!
Sadly, in this culture of conspicuous-consumption consumerism where hype & hyperbole has replaced intellegence & functionality, it might be expected that Gatorade Tiger will soon be the drink of choice for the average muni-track duffer. Call it "The Law of Supply & Idiots".
FYI, Taylormade and every other company pays players to use their equipment.  Your statement that Taylormade drivers are better because more tour players use them is just flat out wrong.  The players who use Taylormade are sponsored by guess who......Taylormade.  Finally, if you want the best driver get fitted by a shop with a launch monitor.  You'll find that shaft selection is much more important than the clubhead itself
Good advice on all counts, however if you have a good swing you can hit anything.
the column is a little biased against nike and tiger for that matter.  I think all the pro's playing taylor made or titleist are also getting paid by the companies.  Even though tiger was getting paid millions by nike he didn't have to play nike equipment and he didn't play it until he felt it surpassed what he was using before, he still uses a titleist putter and they don't pay him anything
Mike, tap the brakes you're holding on too tight. There's not too many things out there that some famous face is not advertizing. For years it was Drink Gatorade and "Be Like Mike". I think most of us understand it's all part of the business. This is another business venture for Tiger, plain and simple.
Mike you should get your facts straight...I thought that this was a prerequisite for journalism. Tiger Woods, when he was an amateur, played a Cobra deep face driver, has a x-100 true temper steel shaft installed in it, and yes did play titleist balls, all because they were the best available at the time. Just 25 years ago, Wilson Sporting Goods owned the PGA tour but times change. The R&D that these companies spend in more than the GDP of most African nations. The rank and file tour players are paid handsomely for playing their clubs...perhaps not in the range of Tiger and Phil...but they are paid well. These players too will only use the flavor of the day if it works. You would need a compass to navigate around the world of each of the tour players bags...what works today may not work tomorrow. At least this article showed your complete lack of journalistic preparation...just like many of your brethren who write about a game they cant possibly understand.
You want to find the "best" golf clubs....Look at what they were playing before they put their name on their bag... You'll find a lot of Pings... Tiger included
A story of Gluttonous Behavior Extraordinaire...

I had just turned 62 having started playing golf at 59. I hesitatingly told my wife I needed to buy a set of clubs and it could cost $1,000.00 or more...and, she said, "OK".

So, I run to see the guy at the Roger Dunn store who said, "Do you want to impress your friends or take their money?"

A little saddened, I none the less buy the PinSeekers for $499.00 AND LOVED THEM.

Three years later, my wife asked me what I want for Christmas, so I trade in the PinSeekers for brand new $1000,00 Callaway's and haven't hit the ball as good since.
Mike, how can you criticize Nike and Gatorade while championing Taylor Made and Titleist?  Although Taylor Made has the most drivers in play on Tour, they also pay the most "tee up money" - money that is paid to Tour players in order for a manufacturer to claim a certain player count for marketing purposes.  Therefore, TM may not have the best driver, either; rather, they simply pay the most guys to play their product.

If you're going to criticize one company, criticize them all.
How refreshing to read something honest and unhyped about Tiger and the business that golf has become.
The Nike brand of golf stuff works also, not just Titleist and TaylorMade maybe your friend just can't hit a draiver period.
Mike--You made some very good points regarding the choice of aparrel and equipment however; I think you missed the key point.  Guys like me and you have played golf for years and are set in our ways.  We may try an occasional new product (the Nike balls are cheaper than the ProV1's) but we'll buy what works for us and not be swayed to buy something based soley on the athlete...regardless of sport.  The point that you've missed is that these endorsements and products are not targeted to us...they are targeted to our children and other people who just don't know any better.  "Hell, if Tiger plays with these then they must be good so I'll buy them" is what the marketing execs hope will happen...and it usually does.  My wife started playing golf this Summer and when WE (operative word there)went to the store/golf shop I told the salesman to show me a no-name set that comes with EVERYTHING because until she understands the game and learns how to play anything more exotic than a set of ACME's would be out of the question.  Why spend money foolishly.  Unfortunately, a lot of people will go to the store looking for the product that their favorite star uses so they can "be like mike" or in this case, like Tiger.
What's with Mike Celizic?  Couldn't find an orginal story to write so he reguritates the ole "Not Buying Into Tiger's Hype!" act like we haven't heard or read THAT one before.  Mike must think most of us have short memories.  That ole line has been told and re-told so many times it's become as dull as rusty razorblades!  Anyone who buys a product simply because it was hyped by a celebrity isn't playing with a full deck!  I have long known that just because some jock or celebrity says it works doesn't mean it works for me.  I was a big fan of the great southpaw Sandy Koufax.  I, too am a lefty so I patterned my baseball fantasy after him.  I would windup like him and throw like him.  Trouble was I didn't have a fastball that his or a curveball like his!  After, getting the pants blown off by a number of street kids in little league baseball I quickly learned that I wasn't going to be anywhere near the stature of Sandy Koufax!  Many of us learn that we won't hit it as far as Tiger or play the game like Tiger.  But please, Celizic!  Let us have our fantasy without your constant reminder that Tiger's hype is just that!  We know he's filling his pockets.  So what!!!  We would all probably do the same if we were in his shoes.  He doesn't owe anyone an explanation or an apology.  We as adults should be able to figure this out on our own without Mike Celizic acting as teacher!!!!
Boy, was that a lame piece of drivel.
I think Mike is just jealous because Tiger is making all those millions of dollars, something he will never ever make even a percentage of.
Just live with it, Mike. Whether you like it or not, this is the era of the Tiger and there is nothing you can do about it. Period.
This would be about the last bs subject to pick at tiger with.  As I remember, some of the Golden Bear equipment wasn't top of the line, either.  Enjoy the money, you earned it.
looking good makes you feel good, so i think if wearing something that makes you feel good does give you a little bit of confidence to play good as well.  i know it works for me.
I don't disagree with the idea buy because they work, not because some guy promotes them...But there seems to be a crankiness directed at the endorsers, particularly Woods. I bet if you could get a100 million on an endorsement you just might do it.
open mike need to mute this sort of comments and analysis.where were you when jack nicklaus was selling his name to the highest bidder or peyton manning or babe ruth and his foundation.this is america, capitalism at its best. so mike be quiet and shut up.
Mike,

While it would seem that your point is compelling, I only offer the following question/comment: Where, in professional sports, is there an athlete who isn't hawking some sort of sports drink, protein bar or apparel? The landscape of professional sports is littered with the stars (both past and present) of their respective sport, endorsing a product. Just look at your favorite NASCAR driver. You can't even count how many company logos (and products) that they wear on their suits, cars and helmets. If J Gord wins a race, what is the FIRST thing they do when he pulls into the winner's circle and gets out of his car?? They hand him a Pepsi bottle. He takes ONE sip and then sprays the rest on the crowd and his crew. He doesn't want it but he's paid to drink it, as mandated by his contract with them. Does this mean that when you're thirsty you won't drink a Pepsi because Gordon does? Get serious.
It's all aimed at the consumer! Demand will always drive price and availability...
Mike,

If Tiger played Taylor Made, you'd be playing Nike. It's as simple as that.

Me? I build and play clones fitted for me, and hit them well.

What on earth is your problem?  Athletes have been endorsing products since the late sixties.  Have you been missing in action for 45 years or what?  From Wheaties to Nike, to Reebok, Puma, Adidas, vehicles, golf carts, shirts, shoes, golf clubs footballs, coke, pepsi, helmets, gatorade, insurance yada, yada, yada
Tiger can endorse anything someone will pay him for...you don't have to buy it if you DON'T wish to, but it will still be out there.
The old Green Monster is rearing its head, me think.
Mike Celizic is a liar, everything we eat, drive, wear, listen to, (radios, mp3 players) look at (TV's,) are indorsed by somebody. So Mike lives in a cave, and walks everywhere he goes, bare feet? He's a Tiger Woods hater and he wants someone to join him. Even the clubs he's using are indorsed by somebody! If he used Tigers personal clubs he still wouldn't break 90. He's a bum and always going to be a bum.
Nike pays obscene amounts of money to Tiger because people will pay obscene amounts of money for products endorsed by him. Don't blame Gatorade or Tiger, this is Capitalism. If consumer's won't pay for it, companies won't do it.

I've ben following the Master's this year, and am sickened by the continuing hype of Tiger Woods, and I wore Nike shoes when that's all they made and made only one style.
The problem is the media making him into Hercules.
Sure he's a great golfer, but there are other deserving players that play golf. The media talks as if he is the ONLY golfer.
Well, for me, bowling my first perfect game at age 52 including 22 strikes in a row--when Tiger has 7 green jackets, He'll earn my respect, which he already had except for the media ruining it by fawning all over him even when he gets trounced by a no-name.
