A-Rod's timing is tacky

Posted: Monday, October 29, 2007 10:10 AM

I’d ask how anyone can think about signing someone so egotistical and disruptive as Alex Rodriguez, who interrupted the World Series to announce that he is a free agent. But ever since Terrell Owens started pulling in millions of dollars by making everything all about his wonderful self, I’ve given up such inquiries.

A-Rod will get his bazillions. So we might as well get over it.

But the timing of his announcement was as low and tacky as it gets. He didn’t do it just during the World Series, but in the middle of Game 4, because, after all, he’s more important than baseball’s biggest showcase.

Rodriguez is the kid who makes flatulent noises during school assemblies – just because he’s not on stage. He’s the one who’s always doing something that screams: “Hey, everybody, look at me!”

Yeah, A-Rod can hit like few others in history, but I’m going to fall back on the argument that he’s never won a ring. And one of the main reasons is because when he finally gets his wish and the entire nation – well, that part of it that cares about what guys in knickers do with a ball and bat – has focused its attention only on him, he can’t perform.

The New York Post said goodbye to A-Rod with a headline that wasn’t up to “Headless-Body-In-Topless-Bar” standards. “A-Bomb,” blared the Post. We’ve all seen better.

But The New York Daily News nailed it with the zinger: “Get Lost!”

I’ve taken my shots at A-Rod. You can’t write a column and not be critical of his attitude and actions over the years. But I’ve also tried to defend him and understand him as the needy little boy he is.

No more, not after he made himself more important than the World Series and Boston’s remarkable postseason. And as much as I am impressed with Scott Boras’ ability to wring money out of owners as an agent, I’m through trying to find reasons to respect A-Rod’s agent and paid apologist. Boras approved this disgustingly classless announcement if he didn’t author it. (My guess is that Boras picked the timing. I’m not sure A-Rod is devious enough to have hit on the idea of calling the Associated Press in mid-game, knowing that the story would spread through the Coors Field press box quickly.)

An agent’s job is to get the best possible deal for his clients. Boras’ problems is that he thinks that’s where the job ends. If he’s aware that the best agents are just as concerned about protecting their clients’ images, it doesn’t show.

Before Boras sank his hooks into A-Rod’s expensive hide, Rodriguez was a young, highly popular player. But Boras made it about A-Rod and money, money and A-Rod. In the process, he destroyed Rodriguez’s image with the fans.

A-Rod is anathema in New York, an excommunicated apostate who will never get a warm welcome again. He’s also toast in Boston, where fans are outraged by his effrontery. How dare he break in on their moment of glory? They hated him as a Yankee. They’ll loathe and despise him now.

Yeah, like T.O. he’ll get the bucks and the microphones and cameras will be there to record his observations on life and the infield fly rule. But if he thinks that’s what life is all about, he’s more pathetic than any of us have ever imagined.

Shameless and selfish...He can't even be a little patient? I find it interesting that he and his agent are that stupid and couldn't anticipate the reaction which is currently occurring.  I've lost all respect for him as a player now!  Shame on you A-Rod.  Congrats Boston and Colorado
you guys are crazy.  half of you aren't even from New York.  last year, you writers blasted and criticized A-rod on everything.  Kid stuff.  this past season he proved all your quips wrong, utterly ridiculous with a terrific season that got the yanks into the playoffs.  Now you're at it again because he wants an american opportunity to play baseball and make a living without all the bs criticism.  Even if he announced his opt out 5 days after the world series, you fools would have found something wrong with that. so please, just shut up!  You should be shouting at the Steinbrenners, those incompetent asses who forced out the best manager in baseball.  If Torre was in place, A-Rod would be too.  he's a new yorker.  they both are!  betcha!
I hope that Theo and the Trio are getting all this, A-Rod isn't worth half what he wants for his presence; keep Mike Lowell, pass on A-Rod
Amen
MLB's recent admission of this classless act by A-Rod should be the beginning of some sort of punishment that needs to be doled out once and for all. What an example this man has set to the youngsters today...is this what baseball is all about? How much money there is to make for yourself? To heck with the rest of the players, it's all me! He should be either banned from the game UNTIL he can prove he's there for other reasons than the millions and millions of dollars that's going into his pockets! When is enough..enough? As far as I'm concerned, I agree with the New York Daily News...GET LOST, A-ROD! You're a disgrace to our national pastime!
Why get down on A-Rod? Yes his agent is a slimeball but his announcement gave the dullest World Series I've seen in 63 years a little bit of a punch.
Who is A-Rod????  Seriously!!  Is he any different than those whinny, immature babies, multi-millionaires who say they have talent, but don't???

And does anyone really follow Baseball anymore??  What a boring sport that is!!!

Guess I havent missed much since I stopped watching or paying attention to the game several years ago..

Peace out
Don't blame A Rod or Boras for this. Blame the reporters who reported the story during the game. Last time i checked, Alex or Scott were NOT the ones who came on the television airwaves and talked about themselves.

Blame the reporters, they are the ones who broke a story they could have waited until later than night to break.

What else should we, the morons who continue to support professional sports, expect from the spoiled brats who make their living off of us?  (Gee, does that include the sports press?)
Scott Boras and A-Rod deserve each other.  It was totally calculated by both of them.  I do not think that they expected this much outrage, but they without a doubt deserve it.  Good ridence.  He could not take the bright lights and big city of New York, so I guess it is on to where?   Tampa?  Arizona?  Alexander City?
Hey A-Rod!
Thanks for saving the Rangers all that money they owed the Yankees in your trade deal. Now the Rangers can afford some real players.  Oh yeh - get an agent that understands baseball and not just money.  I hope you linger in the Japanese leagues!
Here Here. There is no place for A-Rod in Boston. Lowell is a class act and worth Millions over A-Rod.
Hey Boston fans: QUIT CRYING!
You should be putting a statue of Scott Boras next to Faneuil Hall. He got you Manny Ramirez and got A-rod away from the Yankees.
The only disruption to the baseball game was in Boston because nobody else was watching.
Why did your congressman have to announce the investigation of Paul Byrd during the ALCS?
Shut up and pay off some more umpires.
As  lifelong Red Sox fan, I took it personally whether it was intentional or not.
I love the rivalry and hope that the Yankees can recover their lost greatness. I hated to see Torre leave, but he was right to do so. A-Rod is an overpriced whiner. Now I'm afraid the Sox will sign him rather than Lowell.
Who ever pitches against Axx-rod should throw the first pitch at him for being such a baby and not controlling his agent and interfering with baseball's diamond event. It reminds me of a little kid who didn't get his way.
All I have to say to A-Rod is this, many years from now well after you extorted all the bucks baseball could give you remember this, you had the opportunity to have a momument next to the greatest players this world has ever seen. You had the chance to be the great player bringing the new stadium to the next generation. You had the chance to be a legend with the greatest sports team in the greatest city in the world. Your loss.
Back in 2004 I knew the Yankees were in trouble by watching how much fun the Red Sox players were having during their games.  That fun was something I recognized in the Yankee Series-winning teams.  Forget A-Rod's flashy statistics, the Yankees haven't been having fun since he got there.

Most major league players have phenomenal talent but to win it all they need to be having a great time;  look at the Red Sox this year.  They're better off without A-Rod.

But Scott Boras feels terrible ...

As criticism mounts for his handling of Alex Rodriguez's departure from the NY Yankees, a subdued Scott Boras, in an exclusive interview, told eTrueSports: "I'm a real jerk."
A-Rod is responsible for the actions of his agent both legally and ethically.  Boras would never have acted without A-Rot's consent on such a crucial matter.

This outcry of outrage and disgust is being heralded all across the US (and probably abroad), not just in New York. Just check out the signatures and you'll see there are more people from outside NY registering their complaints.

This leak of this news and it's unfortunate timing came directly from Boras, and that's a proven fact.  No way the Yankees had anything to do with it.  That's not even in question.

Lastly, the networks are interested in BREAKING NEWS around the clock all year long  That's what they're there for, that's their job, and that's how they make money, not by playing the game. The World Series is a mere drop in the bucket in every respect for them. So they were doing what was expected of them -- THEY WERE DOING THEIR JOB.
Ok, Ok.  Now listen up Bud Selig.  First of all, FOX should not be allowed future telecasts of the World Series.  How can you, in good consience, allow the games to start at 8:30 EST? Oh yea, $$$. Let's continue to keep those young fans up on school nights until after 1 a.m.  Makes sense to me.  If you missed a FOX broadcast, you simply missed endless, shameless plugs for their fall lineup, with an occassional note of what was actually taking place on the baseball diamond.

Now back to $$$.  Scott BoreAss is simply getting his client, Alex (252 million pieces of silver) Rodriguez the best deal.  How do you expect Alex to survive on the paltry salary he has been receiving?  After all, take a look at all those World Series rings Alex has been responsible for with the Mariners, Rangers, and Yankees.  Let me count the ways...ah, er, let's see, there are...hmm.  To paraphrase Mercucio in Romeo and Juliet, "Bud-Fox and Scott-Alex, a plague on both your houses".
Shame on FOX for allowing A-Rod's Yankee departure any mention during game 4 of the World Series.  Shame on FOX for encouraging A-Rod's beavior and motive.  Shame on FOX for the endless Manny-bashing during the entire series.  Shame on FOX for the inablilty to give credit to hard-working, well built team, whose consistent performance all season landed them in the World Series.  The post-season ALDS and ALCS coverage on Turner was far better than the World Series coverage on FOX.

A-Rod will never be welcome in Boston.  If I see A-Rod standing in the shoes of my favorite Sox player, Mike Lowell....I am moving to russia.
The only thing that sucks worse than A-Rod and Boras is the FOX TV Network.  Their sports division is the only thing worse than their news division with Bill O'Riley.
Why is everyone ragging on A-Rod & Scott Boras?  Did they hold a gun to Fox's head and make them announce the opt-out decision during the game?  What about Fox, they could've waited until after the game, they are just as greedy for ratings.  Am I missing something here?
A-Rot's & BoreAss purposely planned the timing of this huge news.  They could have waited another day -- just one more day.  You can't ignore their intentions.  While Fox is guilty in its own way, at least Fox was doing their job of reporting breaking news as soon as it's available.  That's their sin.  A-Rot & BoreAss are guilty of being rude, nasty, spiteful, greedy...I can go on an on with negative adjectives, but I'm sure you get the picture.
If you are unhappy with Selig because he is not properly dealing with this World Series insult by A-Rod and Boras -- as well as other serious issues that give the appearance of impropriety -- there is an online petition you can sign making your feelings known.  Go to:
http://www.petitiononline.com/mlb/petition-sign.html?
I personally don't know A-Rod, but you gotta respect that he's about the best player in the MLB. Even though he is a punk little kid who doesn't deserve all that money, he is taking the MLB to the next level. That is really all that I care about.
You know, if you have a problem with A-rod and what's his face,  then say it to their face. Go on I dare ya. It's pretty pathetic to talk about people behind their backs.
A-Rod, Clete Boyer, Scott Brosius, Craig Nettles...which of these Yankee third baseman won multiple world series rings?  Which won not a single ring?  'nuff said.
