Rotten apple in Big Apple

Posted: Thursday, November 22, 2007 10:08 AM

I’m watching the Knicks lose another game – their eighth in a row - and this one’s by double digits. The final against the Pistons is 98-86, and the 12-point margin is actually an improvement over the last two losses, which were by 26 points to the Warriors and 32 to the Kings. Still, when you get outscored by a total of 70 points over three games, you’ve probably got a problem.

In the Knicks’ case, it’s pretty evident who the problem is. It’s the guy in the expensive suit on the sideline who’s assembled this magnificent team and concocted the brilliant offense that has produced such stunning results.

It’s not even the losing, but the way the Knicks are doing it. After Wednesday’s game, Detroit guard Flip Murray said: “They looked like they didn’t want to compete.”

And still Isiah Thomas has a job. How much longer he has it remains to be seen. The New York papers are full of rumors that James Dolan, who owns Madison Square Garden and the Knicks, has been said to be losing his patience with his coach. This would be the same James Dolan who last year extended Thomas’ contract because his team president and coach had gotten the team into the final playoff spot in the NBA East and within five games of .500.

It is also the same Dolan who stood by his man when Thomas was found responsible for sexual harassment and wrongful dismissal in a civil case brought by former team executive Anucha Browne. That one cost the team $11 million – subject to appeal, of course.

Since Thomas got his new contract, the Knicks have gone 6-24, including their 2-9 record this year as of Wednesday. And in Madison Square Garden, the fans are numbing their pain by chanting, “Fire Isiah.”

There is no more underachieving coach in American this side of South Bend. And still he continues to hold his job.

I don’t know who’s worse, Thomas, the man who’s built this mess, or Dolan, the man who keeps signing his paychecks.

Thomas is also the biggest phony. That fake and forced grin is all you need to know.  And of course he is innocent as well.  He has no managerial at all (check what he has done since he finished playing) yet because of the fame he achieved as a player, billionaire owners like Dolan think he is a genious.
Thank you Larry Bird (who Thomas claimed would be just another player if he were black) for being the only NBA ite to get it right about Thomas
Thomas and Marbury are both embarassments to the franchise. They're a cancer and need to be cut out. Shopping Marbury, even on Black Friday may be an insermountable task. Cut'em loose and work with what they got.  ... bring back Van Gundy!
Could it be that Isaiah knows some of Dolan's dirty little secrets and that's why Dolan cannot fire him? hahaha!
It would be interesting to see what would have happened in the suit against MSG, with Thomas' comments coming to light, had he been a white coach making those comments about a black fan base.  Remember, Thomas is the one who said Larry Bird would be "just another good player" if he were not white.  And no white coach would hold his job with a terrible team losing without effort the way the Knicks are this season.  The double standard is striking.
Thomas is a fraud.  That forced and fake grin is all you need to know.  He gets by on the fame he achieved as a player with the Pistons but everything he has touched since his playing days ended has turned to crap.  It is very evident to me the Knicks have quit on him.  Who would want to play for a coach who is a liar (that was proven in court) a cheat and treats women like crap?  I am sure he was using that bogus grin the whole time while continuing to lie.
Why should Dolan do anything?  Blame corporate America for buying season tickets to give to their clients.  As long as the arena is full, ownership doesn't care about the fans.
Isaiah Thomas would sell his mother down the river to save his butt.  Everything he touched post his playing days has turned to sh#@t!.  James Dolan states that if his coach doesn't make the playoffs he's gone and then gives him an extended contracted for not meeting his goals.  He then signs Steve Francis & Stephon MEbury and a bunch of other selfish players.  Daddy Dolan needs to take away James' little toy, insert a real president, fire Isaiah and bring integrity and professionsalism to the Knicks, that disappeared when Patrick Ewing and John Starks left.  New Yorker's love a fighting hard working team, not a bunch of thugs.  I was born, raised & lived in New York for 50 plus years, but I am glad I moved to Charlotte where I can watch an organization, that understands class, integrity, professionalism & hardwork and is more successful than the Knicks with 25% of the payroll. Go Bobcats
Stephon I think is the problem he is selfish, get rid of him and get a real floor general. Get the little guy that plays for Orlando magic, he score and passes right over and though bigger men.
I have read some of your articles and I conclude you must be a looser.

You are not writting sports jounalism, your articles are just filled with stuff a disfunctional journalist would write or say.

By the way, in what sport or league you don't have a whipping team? Let me help you out here with stuff a true sports journalist should be writting about. "It's only in American sports that you don't have teams relegated to a lower division, in leagues all over the world, if you don't perform, you get relegated, those teams from the lower division that perform gets promoted to the upper division". That way everybody wins, and most importantly the sport/game wins.

The NBA is a business not a sports, how can a sports league have a CEO? players dress like CEO's or get fired or fined, and by the way, in the NHL, there have been more fights this week compared to the past 3 NBA seasons, yet the NHL players are not told to wear suits or punished for fighting!

Have you asked yourself as a journalist why the US will never win the Olympic basketball gold in a long time? How come team USA was thrashed during the last World Baseball Championships? Or why the MLS is a retirement ground for retired professional footballers?

I'm not sure how and why you still have a job, but I'm sure of one thing, go seek professional help with the issues in your personal life that makes you think you are a sports journalist.

I'm sure I know more sports than you, and I look forward to talking sports with you, when you are out from therapy.
Its such a shame that New York basketball fans have to deal with this mess, I think the only thing that will save this franchise is new OWNERSHIP period. Even after Isaiah is gone we will still have the idiot by commitee known as the Dolans running the ship, until someone different owns the rights to the Knicks they will be a mess, we need a private owner not one w/ corporate influences.
Isiah is a lousy executive; destroyed the CBA and now the Knicks
I'd been resigned to the fact Thomas would wind up in the broadcast studio following the end of his career with the Knicks--which will surely be the last NBA club to ever let him set foot in their front office, let alone actually run it. However, the sexual harassment case may save us from having to hear Zeke's "wisdom." Maybe he can buy the USBL and run it into bankruptcy like he did the CBA.
Mike,
I don't believe I am the first fan to sound the alarm...But, here goes! Dolan is to blame for keeping Thomas. Dolan, as an owner, may be guilty of condoning Thomas's conduct because he himself is a predator of sort and surrounds himself with syncophants and non-excellence.
Here we have the greatest venue for basketball and we have this combo ruling and ruining the roost. Mike,I implore you and your journalist peers to keep sounding off on this problem. Ring the bell as loud as you can and just maybe the shareholders will force the issue.
Ciao

Dolan is the worst owner in sports.   A middle aged daddy's boy, getting by off his father's success (no not the President).  An imature fool.  If you are a Knicks fan, the best thing you can do for your team is to simply stop showing up or watcing the games.  There's nothing worth watching anyway?  Maybe it will force a change by Pop.
I understand the negativity and complains that have been directed at Isiah Thomas and, to a lesser degree, Mr. Dolan but I agree that the talent is there and if these players do not band together and put forth an effort, especially on defense, the entire team, coaching staff and management need to be blown up!
I thought Isiah should have been fired after the Don Chaney-Lenny Wilkens debacle...That should have been a red flag of things to come...And that idiot of an owner should be publicly flogged...Dave DeBusschere and Red Holzman must be rolling over in their graves...This is so hard to see as a life-long Knicks fan
Very few NBA superstars make good coaches, and Isiah Thomas is no exception.  Too much ego and not enough basic human decency.  Hopefully, the owner of the Knicks will recognize that Thomas--to paraphrase Eldridge Cleaver--is part of the problem--not the solution!
As a former Knicks fan, it saddens me deeply *to a point* to see what this team has become.  You'd think that any owner who hires someone who managed to sink an ENTIRE LEAGUE deserves to lose his job, but I guess stupidity has its privileges and ignorance is indeed bliss.

Isiah's put together this train wreck that in theory, could only win in a video game and since this ain't no game...you've got utter crap.  Steph Infection's a pitiful point guard and not a much better shooting guard.  Zach's probably a few months away from going off on someone and all told, I'm thinking they're going to start turning on each other and occupying the back pages of the Post and Daily News before the end of 07.

I'd say 'Fire Isiah', but that would show Dolan has something he's shown he has none of to this point...

Common sense.
My disrespect for Isiah began when he 'tippy-toed' to the locker room with that stupid grin on his face while being blown out in a playoff game.  Since then my disrespect has taken a back seat to disdain.  He is a man of despicable character and doesn't even deserve the time it took to write this.
Tim in Calgary - You are just off the mark.  I am not sure what your article purports to endorse, other than a relegation league, we are pansies who wear suits, wont win the gold in ball, and that Mike has ?? personal issues??.  Hmm....its called opinion bro, you know, like the drivel you put up.  And I'm sure you know FAR more about sports...and Mike has personal issues??
The knicks will never be successful as long as they keep isiah around. He doesn`t care about anyone but himself and the janitor at MSG could do a better job than that phony.
Mike,

Why don't you leave Notre Dame and Charlie Weis alone already?! You're just being a lazy writer by going to same old joke this year.
Dump Isiah, dump Selfishbury and da~Dolan. This trio knows less about owning a team, coaching a team or playing for a team. Cut bait today! Cover the wound with some salt and big band-aids and start over. The key to winning a championship is having a championship coach, player or executive running the team. Until a proven leadership is at the helm this ship is sunk and done.
Tim Calgary are you serious? You can't even compare basketball to football (Soccer). There is not enough teams in the NBA to relegate. They would smash semi-pro leagues and not to mention get paid nothing compared to their salaries in the NBA. Only way that would work if a "real"  world basketball league was formed that had the NBA teams included to play a season with them. Probably not going to happen.

As for MLS, the only reason they get players like Beckham is to further the sport here in the states. He's a big name that can attract a lot more support for soccer here in the US. He's going to retire soon, so why not help a country out that's getting more involved with the sport and get a HUGE retirement package. Who wouldn't want that, except die hard English fans.

We're getting better and would of most likely beat Italy if we did not get those horrible calls at the World Cup.

As for basketball and the Olympics. I think we did slip a little bit and I feel the rosters they filled for the US team have not been filled properly. We still have the best players in the world. I just think the chemistry isn't there with some of the previous squads. Remember the dream team? Not even close to being touched back in the day. Now Europe, Asia, South America and other countries have stepped their games up. I think we took their low skills for granted and now need to put together another dream team that has heart and flows well together. If that happens, not a team in the world can touch us.

The Knicks have needed help for a long time. I knew Isiah wasn't the answer. They need a coach that's actually won a championship (As a coach) or a younger energetic coach that's ready to try new things and get a winning formula going (Easier said than done).

Tim, you must not know a lot about NY basketball. The journalists and fans talk with a lot of heart about the Knicks. The Knicks use to be a stellar team. The last decade or so, they've produced poor results.

They should try to get Koby, hahaha.

Larry Bird is the man (Clutch). <---That's coming from a 26 yr old.

Cheers

Tim in Calgary...Say what!?!?!?!  If you don't like the type of sports we have in the USA, stick to curling or ice-fishing.
Isiah has turned out to be a Joe-Dumars-Wannabee.

FIRE MILLEN!
Solution:  All KNICK ticket holders should volunteer their tickets for one game where a Coach will be chosen from the attendants similar to the 1996 movie EDDIE.

Anyone remember that 1996 movie titled "EDDIE" with Whoppi Goldberg as the coach of the Knicks:

Manhattan limousine driver Eddie Franklin (Whoopi Goldberg) lives and breathes basketball. Her world revolves around Madison Square Garden, home of her beloved, albeit in last place, New York Knicks. After a one game stint as the team's honorary coach, Eddie is offered the real head coaching post as part of a publicity stunt engineered by the new Knicks owner, Wild Bill Burgess (Frank Langella).

Between laughs, Eddie teaches the New York Knicks and their owner a lesson they will never forget, and she reminds us all that the game is, ultimately, just that -- a game. It's for the fans, and it's supposed to be fun.

Mr. Thomas is a great guy and he has all my respect. If he was white, the story would have been written different. He is not perfect and neither are we who judge him.He is doing the best he can and he has my support. All the mess White People have done, write about that, you'll have a Best Seller.
I met Zeke in the elevator of the Radisson hotel in Sioux Falls SD. He was there ruining the Sky Force and the entire CBA league so I let him know how people in the Midwest did not like the way he was driving the CBA into the ground. He politely told me to shut the %$#@ up in the elevator. Zeke was 4 body guards away from losing his teeth. I told him he was a classless piece of work and laughed at him.
BOSTON 104, NEW YORK 59.  If anyone who saw the game,  did you happen to notice the body language of the Knicks players not just on the floor, but the players sitting on the bench.  That pretty much says it all, Isiah must go.  But you all he will not since he and James Dolan are good buddies.  A previous poster forgot to mention he almost ran the Toronto Raptors into the ground when they were an expansion franchise.  ISIAH just please go away and stay away!!!!
