Romo’s Achilles’ heel? Beautiful singers

Posted: Tuesday, December 18, 2007 12:48 PM

Memo to Tony Romo: Tell your girlfriends not to come to the game.

On Sunday, Tony Romo had one of the two worst passing games of his career against Philadelphia. Last year, also against Philly, was his other horrible day.

Some would see that and surmise that the Eagles have his number. But savvy observers note that the common thread in both losses wasn’t the opponent but the presence in the stadium of a Romo girlfriend.

Last year, it was Carrie Underwood before whose sultry gaze Romo melted like a country bumpkin. On Sunday, the unlucky lady was Jessica Simpson. It cannot be a coincidence that both are singers, who occasionally sing about heartache and misadventure.

Consider it a bad idea to date anyone in that vein. We’re talking high-maintenance here, and if that’s an overly broad generalization, so be it. And Simpson and Underwood could be the finest people in the world. Just the same, they’re performers and they’re stars who need the spotlight and the applause.

Romo’s young, handsome and a budding NFL superstar. I’m not going to say he can have any woman he wants. But he’s certainly got his choice of a wide range of beautiful women, any of whom could help him to stand up straight in the pocket.

But there’s a rule about being a star and dating: Don’t date somebody who’s got to be a bigger star than you. It’s not going to work.

Romo needs to watch some of sports’ other leading bachelors and take some notes. Sure, Derek Jeter dates superstars – Mariah Carey, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johansson – but you don’t see him bringing them to the game and giving them seats in an executive suite. You also don’t see them wearing his jersey with his number done up in pink on it, as Simpson did for her sweetie on Sunday.

In other words, Jeter doesn’t take his toys to the office. Also, no matter how big a star they are, he thinks he’s bigger; they’re the ones who have to impress him, not the other way around.

Then there’s Tom Brady, the guy Romo would like to be. Brady’s current girlfriend is said to be Gisele Bundchen, the supermodel. Yes, she’s a star, but she’s not one who needs to be on stage with people applauding her. She’s got a job that requires her to say nothing and look gorgeous, and for that she gets paid large gobs of money. She also doesn’t show up in luxury suites, getting more camera time on the game broadcast than her boyfriend. And she doesn’t care if anyone recognizes her; in fact, she probably prefers they don’t.

I’m not trying to mess with Romo’s love life, but he’s clearly got a problem with girlfriends and performance anxiety on the field. If he has to go out with singers, there’s not much anyone can do about it. But the next time he hits up Jerry Jones for a ticket for his honey, the Cowboys’ owner would be advised to tell his quarterback he’s sorry, but the game’s sold out.

Way to go, Jessica! I cannot stand the Cowboys and it was a pleasure seeing them lose. If I could afford it, I would buy Jessica a season ticket, box seats no less, to make sure she attended every Cowboys game.
"JETER DOESN'T TAKE HIS TOYS TO THE OFFICE?!" - You are saying that having a beautiful, successful woman by your side is a like having a TOY!?  You sexist, stupid pig!  Thank GOD I'm not related to you..Had to be from Texas!
I just knew some idiot would find a way to blame Terrell Owens for Tony Romo's imcompetent play. Where do all these bigots come from?
I can't believe that you people are making dum statement, blaming the poor performance of Romo on Jessica Simpson, come on people, it was phillly defend who cause Romo to perform poorly, give credit where credit is due....even T.O. jump in ban wagon....
Is it any one else's opinion that maybe he played just a bad game against a conference team who always play the cowboys tough?
The defense turned the Cowboys into Cattle Queens.  It's not a new phenomenom.
Plus, people are looking at Romo as a savior.  He's an above-par quarterback who, so far, is out-punting his coverage (In romance and in the NFL).
Seriously-This is RIDICULOUS!  If Romo can't handle his girlfriends being at the games then there are bigger problems in Dallas.  It is ridiculous to blame the loss of the game on who he is dating!  I am not a big fan of Simpson, but to rake her over the coals for showing up and supporting her boyfriend is stupid.
For the good of all Cowboys fans, I will take Jessica every Cowboy home game!!!!
THE REAL PROBLEM IS THAT MR. " I'M BIGGER THAN THE GAME " OWENS IS JEALOUS ! WHO DID THEY BLAME WHEN THE CAVALIERS LOST 6 IN A ROW ? LEBRON JAMES HAD A SPRAINED FINGER, BUT THEY DID'NT BLAME HIS GIRLFRIEND WHO WAS ALSO AT THE Q. SIMPLY PUT, ROMO HAS AN INJURED THUMB. NOTHING ELSE !
Yes, wives and girlfriends attend football games.  However, how many of them do you see doing a "shimmy" for the cameras?  I was embarrassed for both Tony and Jessica.  Who knows if having her there really had any effect on his game.  However, perceptions of the television audience are formed by watching how she reacts to the game.  Jessica, from now on, do Tony a favor.  Act like you know what is going on regarding the football game, and just politely give a pleasant wave to the cameras.  Act like you've got good sense.  Tony will no doubt take less flack from his teammates/viewing audience if you don't give us all a shimmy-shake and turn on your star routine.

Sincerely,
An over fifty, female, football fan, who thinks Jess should model her behaviour after Bret Favre's wife.
Typical Dallas Cowboys fans -- blaming everyone and everything else when they lose.  They need to realize that they are not as good as they think they are.  The Eagles almost beat New England a few weeks ago, and New England destroyed the Cowboys.  So why try to blame Jessica Simpson for a loss when the obvious reason is that the Cowboys were cocky and took the Eagles lightly, and showed the football world that Tony Romo's over-publicized smile doesn't help Dallas win games.

I love Jessica Simpson, and even more so if she does cause the Cowboys to lose!!
Jessica Simpson was sitting in a box behind my seat at the Cowboys Jets game on Thanksgiving and at the Cowboys Packers game the Thursday after. Of course the cameras didn't spot her in those games when Romo played well.

This article is flawed.
God, this excuse is really making the cowboys look like a joke. If Jessica caused the lose, then you know what, make Romo work harder at concentrating on the game and not his girlfriend being in the crowd. If her being there really was the cause of the loss and Romo's terrible game, it's his fault not hers, high school and college quarterbacks have their girlfriends at the games all the time. This loss was the teams own fault, so get over yourselves and work on keeping your QB's head in the game.
HALLELUJAH, SAY IT AGAIN!!!  A lot of sports media here in Dallas don't think there is anything to this but I, and many other Cowboys fans, do.  Romo is a 27 year old undrafted football player from Eastern Illinois.  Now, he is a newly made multi-millionaire in his first season as the starting QB for one of the most visible sports franchises in the world and he has blond superstars beating down his door.  Think his head might be just a little bit big???  Sure Tom Brady does this but Tom Brady has more experience and alot more wins and championships! Brady has earned the right to roll like a superstar, Romo doesn't even have a full season under his belt yet and he's already rolling like he hung the moon (i.e. spending weekends in LA with Britney Spears, give me a break!).

I do think there is something to this "anxiety/superstar" notion and Romo needs to get his mind off his lady of the moment and back on his business...his $67 million dollar business I might add.  There is plenty of time for him to be tabloid fodder in the off-season.

P.S.  I love the line, "Jeter doesn't take his toys to the office."  GENIUS!!!
How can he concentrate with a bodacious blond watching his every move.  The voluptuous vixen looked like she ready for the post-game party by the end of the first quarter!
Romo is only as good as his supporting staff. Overhyped to death. He will never be a Brett Favre or a John Elway, and that has nothing to do with his girlfriends being in the stands. Nuff said.
It's true.  And my beloved Raiders have been losing for the last few decades because some good looking girl is in the stands and our various quarterbacks have not been able to concentrate.  Yea, that's it.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I really don't think it's the girls that's affecting Tony Romo. I think it's Wade Wilson. He's ruined every quarterback he ever got hold of.  He wasn't much of a quarterback himself, so how can he teach anyone else? Leave the girls alone.
T.O. is the one that needs to focus...Dude get your mind off your teammates girl! Who knows what was up with Romo, bad day, hot sex before the game, whatever... it was one of those days, everyone has them. T.O. is just jealous because he should be so lucky to have the same problem...

He's a smart guy, look at his play on the field, eventually the off field games will improve too. He'll give up off the field trophy hunting sooner or later.
Are you all really this stupid?  Please.  If he can't focus enough on his game because his girlfriend is in attendance he's got bigger issues to tackle.  No pun intended.  This is the kind of logic one would would expect from someone with Jessica's IQ.  Find something else to bond with TO about and leave Jessica alone.
The last time I checked Romo does'nt play defence! They got out played on Sunday you morons, plane and simple.
Man you people if the announcers, and the camaras weren't all in Jessica's face every 5 minutes we wouldn't even be talking about this. The Media will do anything to start CRAP!!!!  Jealous, Jealous, Jealous.. This just goes to show you folks that Roma is only Human I know it hurts but have a beer and get over it.. Also if T.O. had caught a few of those balls that were thrown to him thay could have sparked some momentium.. They could have won.
Absolutely unbelievable.  I find it offensive that it would even be suggested that Jessica Simpson's attendance at a game affected the game's outcome.  These are professionals.  Those who say so are superstitious fools who probably bet the numbers on license plates they see during the day.  Give me a break.  What happened to personal responsibility. No wonder I children do not know how to own up to their own deeds.  As a society, we model to them that they don't have to be responsible.
who cares?  she's hot, i would mess up work for a week to get a shot at her.
Famous words from Rocky's trainer: "Women weaken legs!"
They seem to be in a slump.  They were barely able to beat Detroit(a team heading in the wrong direction).  This was a division game, so they should have been prepared.  Tony started off throwing badly and never recovered.  Dallas was never really able to run on the Eagles.  Hopefully they will bounce back with Carolina and Washington or it will be another meltdown in December.  If they are unable to take care of business these next two weeks, they will have a quick exit.  TO looks like his is about to have a meltdown.  Since Jones wanted him, he had better cater to him through the season, then he can do with him what he wants to.  If TO has a meltdown and Glenn is unable to get up to full speed, Dallas will have a very tough time, especially if they have to go up to Green Bay and play on a frozen field.
May be the Eagles have something to do with it. It's time to give the Eagles some credits.  They, after all, gave the Patriots a scare a few weeks ago.
The Cowboys lost!Romo has a girlfriend,go figure.
T.O. is back....to his old ways.
Can we move on now.
These Hollywood, plastic boobs, fake hair, pumped up lips, dark tan in the middle of winter, mentally unstable, depressed drama bimbos can really put a root on a guys head, especially when he needs to be focused.  The minute I heard that Romo was dating Simpson, even before the game.  I thought what an idiot.  There go the payoffs.
The problem was not Jessica Simpson it was Fox TV.  Any other channel does not show here and lets the Cowboys stand on their own.  WHich they did not do.
Guess the media needs something to hype these days. You guys are so off base on this one! Don't forget she was at Packer game when the BOYS kicked their butt.
Was Jessica Simpson at the Buffalo game, too?

Exactly.

As long as all of this "research" is being done to discern the source of Romo's Sunday afternoon malaise (since a sprained thumb, ostensibly, isn't good enough), why not examine the phases of the moon?  Perhaps peruse US Weekly's astrological chart?
I wonder how much money it would take to get Jessica Simpson to attend the game if the Packers play in Dallas again?
It doesn't really matter who (or maybe I should rephrase what) The Boy from Burlington is seeing. Dallas peaked against Green Bay and it's mostly down hill for them from here. The NFC will go through Lambeau, right where it belongs. T.O. is getting increasingly riled up and this Sunday will surely add to it. They might win at Carolina, but in the freezing cold at Washington on Week 17, they will hand Favre and Company the keys to home field advantage.
Romo, my friend, keep gazing up at the suites, your boyish eyes a flutter, while the game clock is ticking. That way, instead of blundering away the game like you did last year in one fell swoop, you'll do it over a much more fan agonizing two game stretch.
Afterwards, when Jessica says "Oh Tony, I'm soooo proud of you" you can hand her the phone and tell her it's Nick calling. She won't even realize that the phone never rang!!!
Tony didn't suck because of Jessica being there he was trying to force the ball to T.O and that didnt work.  T.O  needs to be more patient and he needs to utilize Witten alot more , He had a bad day , but It really wouldn't be a bad idea if he left his girl friends at home so that he does'nt get distracted.
Come on romo! Give us some football magic not girlfriend magic! Save the girlfriends for some other time and why do you keep picking between jessica and carrie. Come on carrie is alot prettier than jessica. Gimme a break.
I heard Jessica asked her daddy why the Zamboni didn't come out onto the field at halftime...
All this talk about Jessica, Tony, and T.O. being the reason for the loss is really funny.  It was the Philadelphia Eagles that served notice that they can stop both players, and are not push-overs.
Romo was out of sync with his teammates. He was not as focused as he needed to be. Like Brett Favre wasn't before the game in Dallas (walking through the set with Dionne and Mariuchi.  You must remain focused and block out every distraction. T.O. became frustrated with the game plan and lack of focus by Romo. This caused him to lose focus and patience. By then it was over because Romos tried to overcompensate and please T.O. Here come the picks. All Romos fault.........Jessica???
Sure, can't blame a bad game on the girl that wasn't physically on the field. But is everyone forgetting the tacky presence she put forth on top of the shameless publicity opportunity to play her music after half time?? The whole thing came across as distasteful to any fan, Cowboy or other. Take a look at any other girlfriend/wife and you do not see such a camera hungry presence. The Cowboys, my friends, are first class; however, Jessica represented us as ridiculous high school prom king and queen popularity contest. The way the swooned was absurd and childish. Romo did not hurt his thumb until the 3rd quarter and his attitude was unarguably different from the beginning of the game; not even one smile. Something was going on beyond the physical bruised thumb and unfortunately since Jessica felt the need to so indelicately display her crush, she has proclaimed herself as an easy target and a most likely cause of the psyche downfall of Romo this game.  Sure, we may never know what really happened, but Jessica’s reaction to the media that day is a great indicator of her maturity and an immense addition to an argument against her.
I can't believe what i am reading...BLAMING a woman for a professional, high-paid, football player having a bad day??!!!! What's next...his thong gave him a wedgie!!!! Give me a break.  I thought Jessica looked like a "groupie" with her pink football jersey.  And as far as Tony goes, if you can't stand the heat get out of the stadium!!!!!!!
The Cowboys only ran the ball 14 times, with Barber and Jones each getting 7. They have got to be kidding. What ever happened to "ball control?" Also, after Romo hurt his thumb, why did they not utilize Brad Johnson? My point: Jessica did not have anything to do with the loss. It was the Staff's bad decisions.
stop it with the Jessica tony t.o.thing, the cowboy's are good and we'll see where tony can take them
I usually like Mr. Celizic's articles, but I found this one very offensive:  Women are neither toys nor property.  If Mr. Celizic tried to be funny, he failed miserably and displayed very poor judgment.   Otherwise, he is plain and simply a misogynist, which would be even sadder.

Football-wise, I think the fact wasn't even worth discussing (particularly if you noted that Ms. Simpson attended two other games where Romo performed very well). Maybe Mr. Celizic should concentrate on trying to be more insightful about the sport, rather than falling for the cheap tabloid shot.

Ban women from NFL games...they shouldn't be there...it's a man's world....and then send them my way!!!!
Congrats on a finely tuned sexist and stupid argument. It would be funny if you meant it as satire, but unfortunately you sound serious. You imply throughout that good sports girlfriend stays quiet, out of the limelight, and therefore is supportive. I'm no fan of Jessica Simpson's by any means, but as far as I know, Romo invited her to the game and suite. The media and cameras focused on her - or did she run onto the field screaming for attention??? In the end, it's typical - it's the woman's fault if she shows up to be supportive. And it's her fault if she chooses to spend her time doing other things besides rooting for her man. This New Year's you might want to notice that we are entering 2008, NOT 1908 ... Women are not toys ...Here's to hoping you can handle your women better than your boy Romo.

Ok, so here's the deal.  Yes Romo had a bad game.  But he's the one who invited her in the first place.  If he thought she'd be a problem, she wouldn't be there.  Not to mention Carrie used to go to games all the time.  It can't be the girlfriend aspect of it.  Also this was the SECOND time he did badly agains the Eagles.  AND she has been to other games.  So clearly it had NOTING to do with her being there.  She wanted to show support for her man.....and there's wrong with that.  I'm sure if Tony's got a problem, he'll solve it himself.
Keep the bimbo out of the games..
HE JUST HAD A BAD GAME,GET OVER IT AND WIN THE REST OF THE GAMES.
What do you mean that Gisele doesn't need the spotlight?  She covets it and has embarrassed him and Bridget.  How amny picture of them in public have we seen!
The real reason Romo did not perform well was that he was worn out from the night before. didn't you see that look in his face, (you know the look??)
she problably keep him up all night wanting to talk..... you called her a singer???
Romo you tha Man!!!
just leave the chick at home.
