Parcells can right Falcons' ... no, Dolphins' sinking ship

Posted: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 8:09 AM

It's always dangerous to write about Bill Parcells until the ink on the contract is signed. And even then, it's still risky.

Just hours ago, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank was about to hire Bill Parcells to oversee football operations. Blank said he had an agreement in principle with Parcells, in fact.

So it appeared that Blank was making a bold, smart move to put his floundering franchise on the right track after a brutal season.

But Parcells never makes things easy, and after he told the Falcons that he was considering an offer from the Miami Dolphins, talks fell through.

It looks like the Tuna was trying to play two teams against each other, and it didn't work.

But if the Dolphins -- or heck, any other team -- gets the guy, they're getting somebody good. You can't do better than hiring Parcells to start rebuilding the roster.

The Tuna may not be the coach he once was, which is less a criticism of him than it is of the modern players, Terrell Owens chief among them, who have little use for an old-school hard-ass like Parcells. But it’s yet to be shown that there are many people around who know more about football and football players than he.

He built the Jets into a team that made it to the AFC Championship Game. In Dallas, he put together most of the team that is at the moment the class of the NFC and the favorite to represent that conference in the Super Bowl.

That ability to identify character players who fit into a system will start to pay immediate dividends in Miami.

So, Merry Christmas, Miami ... assuming it happens.

Good piece.  Bill may yet retire or have his heart attack, but his insertion into the Atlanta organization in the role contemplated is a solid move.  It's time for adult supervision in Atlanta.  As a Jersey guy and Jets season ticket, I am sure Bill will find a new and creative way to make my Sundays tougher.
I'm Going to have Fish and Chips for dinner tonight! What a great move by my Falcons! Good Luck Bill!
I completely agree with Mike.  Arthur has made some mistakes and has apparently taken a structured approach to forseeably deal with them.  This is the best move Arthur can make for himself and his organization at this moment and time.  Tuna should be able to build a quality infrastructure for the falcons.  He's proved that to many other organizations in the National Football league; Dallas being the latest.  Go Arthur Go.
Great move by the Falcons, imo...I hope Parcells can take that team and get them back where they were not so long ago....This from a Pack fan who was astounded by the idiocy of what Vick did to that team and himself...Also because of the Petrino situation....Go Parcells and Falcons....

Mr. Parcells should be given credit for the personnel decisions that have paid off for Dallas. However, Terrell Owens had nothing to do with the Parcells failures as a head coach in Dallas. In fact, Parcells was coaching the same team that Wade Phillips is coaching which includes a very productive Owens. I don't disagree that he can be an improvement for personnel decisions in Atlanta, but on the coaching front it was more common than not that the other side of the sidelines was far better prepared on Sunday's when he coached in Dallas. Mr. Blank just needs to keep him off the sidelines. His time has passed.
that is what miami needs. they haven't had that for years. and speaking as true dolphin fan, we need him!
Who is your proof reader? He/she's fired! Read your first line (the ink is dry, not signed).
Detail oriented, character assessing, fundamental football men like Lombardi, Landry, Parcells and Holmgren are what it takes to turn a franchise around completely.
Bill would turn any team around. He's a leader, a players coach and a gentleman. I believe any team that
had a loosing season, would be proud to have him in the main office. I wish him the best.
