'Lynch Tiger' wasn't worth suspension

Posted: Thursday, January 10, 2008 2:19 PM

Kelly Tilghman should have used a different choice of words or, better yet, an entirely different analogy. But what the Golf Channel anchor said about Tiger Woods last Friday did not merit being suspended for two minutes let along two weeks.

Shame on the Golf Channel for suspending her, and shame on Al Sharpton for so trivializing one of the most important social issues in America by demanding that Tilghman be fired for an utterly innocent verbal slip.

Click here to watch the video.

She and co-anchor Nick Faldo were joking at the Mercedes-Benz Championship about what young golfers could do to unseat Tiger.

“Maybe they should just gang up on him for a while,” Faldo suggested.

“Lynch him in a back alley,” laughed Tilghman.

Tilghman reportedly gets along well with Woods, and the golfer’s agent said he understood there was no malicious intent in the comment. Had she said “mug him in a back alley” – and I’d bet that’s what she meant to say – nobody would have said a word. As it was, it took five days for Sharpton to get himself on CNN to demand that Tilghman be fired for saying a word that can be racially charged.

And then he acted as if the comment were the second coming of the reprehensible slur for which Don Imus was quite rightly fired by CBS Radio.

“Lynching is not murder in general, it’s not assault in general,” Sharpton said. “It’s a specific racial term that this women should be held accountable for. What she said is racist. Whether she’s a racist ... is immaterial. She’s a broadcaster. The channel has to be accountable to the public.”

Note the use of the misogynistic term “this woman.” Note the conclusion that “what she said is racist.” Note the claim that the word is “a specific racial term.”

I realize the word has racial connotations and is offensive to many black Americans. That’s why I don’t use it in columns or stories. I also object to the suggestion, even in jest, that great players should be taken out by the competition. Better to suggest they steal his clubs or put itching powder in his shorts.

But she was suspended for no reason other than offending Al Sharpton, and if that’s what we’ve come to, we’ve got a real problem. Given how easy it is to offend him, no one’s job is safe. And that’s not fair. Imus intended to be offensive and got what was coming to him. Tilghman didn’t, but she got what wasn’t coming to her anyway.

What’s really unjust is that Sharpton is guilty of the same racism he rails against. He also gives people more capacity for hate than most of us have. To accuse someone of racism is a grave accusation, and such charges shouldn’t be thrown around as blithely as Sharpton does. And the delight h takes in his own self-righteousness – as if he’s never said or done anything offensive – is an insult to every person who truly cares about justice and equality.

With all due respect to the Reverend, who could use some lessons in humility and charity not to mention history, not everyone automatically associates lynching with racism. As far as I knew for much of my life, lynching was what they did in the old West to cattle rustlers and other ne’er-do-wells. I had no clue there was a racial connotation until much later in life.

There’s a great novel written on the subject by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. It’s called “The Ox-Bow Incident,” and it’s one of those books every American should read, Sharpton included. It’s all about lynching, and there’s not a scrap of racism in it.

Sharpton is like one of the cowboys in the book who lynch an innocent man. He doesn’t care whether the person he attacks is innocent or not. If she or he looks guilty to him, that’s enough.

And the Golf Channel fell for his demagoguery. Rather than tell him that no offense was meant by Tilghman nor taken by Tiger, and so no action would be taken other than a chat about being more careful about what she says on the air, they suspended her. Her crime wasn’t being insensitive. It was offending Al Sharpton.

Shame on the network and shame on him.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Tilghman said something racist and offensive, and Sharpton did his "horrors!" act.  A short suspension for her seems just fine to this white woman.  And as for the Reverend Al--who listens to him?  Anyone?
The future looks darker now, more than ever, with the continued bashing of people that "offended" somone.  It is a sad day when executives cower to a very few that were offended.  Tiger himself has been hammered about what he has said as we all remember the "spaz" comment.  Tiger knows what it is like to have every word disected as to what it could mean.  If the small minded "offended" of the world continue to dictate what we hear, soon all we will hear is silence.  Kelly blesses us all with her grace and charm and I know that she will continue to do so, unfortunately more carefully than before.  As for The Golf Channel...they made their decision, and in so doing gave more voice to people that feed on hate and racism.  I am ashamed that people that value the integrity of golf do not understand that they themselves are feeding such negative people.
Here, here. Sharpton is the most racist person with a public voice that I have ever had to suffer through. He has caused more hate between races than he has healed by a fair margin. I have friends of all color and I am a heinz 57 myself. I'll put my chips in with Bill Cosby, thank you.
While I have no interest in defending Opportunist Sharpton, your response to this incident is lame and unnecessary.

Note the misuse of the term "women" in the quote attributed to Sharpton.  How is the use of language such as "that woman" misogynistic?  It isn't.  You simply felt compelled to comment on a statement which meant nothing and a response which means even less.

Retirement should be looming.
good job, Arnie step up and end this now!
For once in my life I will have to agree with Mike here (I am from Seattle and he never picks the Hawks or gives them much respect).  Al Sharpton loves to jump on any comment he considers racist, and this was truly a case of a bad choice of words.  For him it seems to be another way to get publicity, even though he might be ruining someone's career or reputation.  If Tiger was not offended by it, how can Al Sharpton honestly think this person should be fired, or that they meant any ill will?  I think he is the one who needs to take some classes on racial understanding.
No offense may have been taken by Tilghman or Tiger, but there was offense taken by me.  I am a white American that grew up in the Deep South.  I know racism. Tiger knows racism. Intent aside, the term lynching is laced with racism.  Lynching, by law in the United States, is not only a felony but a hate crime as well.

Lynching was used as a means of terrorism, and vigilante justice, in other countries long before the Civil Rights era of the US.  But to us, Americans, it is a piece in the fabric of our history. It is an act of terrorism on black Americans by white Americans.  That is how we know it.  That is why it is personal and that is why it is not funny today as it was not funny fifty years ago.

Americans should take a notice of their history and out of respect for the success in advancements that our society has made, vow to only further those advancements.  We have come far, but we have further to go as evidenced in this situation. Statements like this set us back; statements like this are not only insensitive, but ignorant. They make Americans look stupid.

People who have positions in our country that allow them to sit in front of the cameras, to come into our living rooms, are not only charged with the responsibility of their jobs but to be respectful of the millions of people who watch them.  Sure, if we get offended, we can turn off our TV sets, but why should it come to that?  Why can they think before they speak? And why should we defend their ignorance?
good call. I completely agree with you.
You are wrong.  I have little doubt that it was a simplke mistake and the sportscaster is not racist.  However, the slip of the toungue was so offensive and becuase of her position, she absolutely should be suspended.  I do agree that Sharpton should butt out as that hypocrit has made equally offensive remarks.
Sharpton makes me want to vomit every time he opens his mouth!!!
Being a black male of 58 years I hope the golf channel listens to you and puts her back on the air.Sharpton is an idiot...a rascist idiot and someone has to say it...tell him to get a job and leave the world alone...i watch the golf channel and enjoty the lady and her comments..man, what have we come too if people like SHARPTON CAN GET SOMEONE SUSPENDED FOR A SLIP OF THE TONGUE....ITS A SAD DAY FOR AMERICA
Tilgham meant what she said.  I noticed her lips movement as she spoke on the video.  I don't think she was joking!
Very well said, I’m very disappointed with the Golf Channel for letting them-selves be so easily pushed around.
Exactly.  The word "lynch" did not originate in a racial context, but rather from William Lynch, who, in 1780, decided he would administer vigilante justice to criminals since there was little enforcment from the government.  It was a raceless context.  I have never thought of "lynch" as a race specific term until this recent incident.  Yes, you read about blacks unfairly lynched, just as you read about blacks unfairly beaten.  Will Sharpton claim "beat" as an exclusively anti-black term next?  Sharpton is nothing but poison to people, language, and race relations.
Nice job, Mike.  No one in the mainstream media has the guts to call the "reverend" out, lest they be suspended for racism...
I agree she needed to be suspended. It is an inappropriate analogy, or at the very least a poor one. It is not even funny. It is hard to see it as a facetious remark.
Hear, hear Mike! I am SO tired of the supposed Reverend Al Sharpton! The man is one of the most racist people in our country! i hate to break it to him but white people did not invent racism!(i.e. see Rwanda, Ethiopia, Liberia, etc). Please take a page from the good Dr. King, and learn how to respect ALL people!
Why is there an issue as long as Tiger wasn't offended? It's like the old line about a tree falling in the wood and nobody hearing it...can it really be an insult if the person it was aimed at didn't take it that way? (And if it can, then shouldn't Sharpton be calling out Woods for letting her off the hook?)
Amen
I agree fully to your comments towards sharpton!
Right on Celizic.  I hope Obama wins so he can instill pride, possibility, and self-confidence into people of color.  I'm sick of Sharpton and Jackson and their insecurities.
Agreed.  Sharpton needs to understand that this is a different generation of young Americans who are not well-versed in the history of a term as it pertains to slavery or black history.  All he does is breeds life into racism and keeps it alive and well in the hearts and minds of Americans every time someone says something that offends him.  As for the young woman and many other young Americans, maybe ignorance is bliss, but it's better than raw hatred - and that's not what this comment was.  As long as Tiger gets it I personally don't care.
Mike, you are spot on here.  My thoughts exactly but I couldn't have expressed them as eloquently as you.  Well done.
I'm not black but I find the use of the term "lynch" offensive and feel that it does indeed have racial overtones. People in general need to recognize that even if the intent of the person speaking is benign, the words still have impact to the listener. We all know Al Sharpton is a media-loving soapboxer. But just because Sharpton is using this as his latest platform doesn't cancel out the fact that Tilghman's use of the word and the context it was used in are shockingly inappropriate.
I do not believe she meant any I'll will toword Mr Woods especially since she is acqainted with him. Mr Sharpton should take a good long look in the mirror of judgement before he makes comments and demands of Networks and the American People. It would be nice if Mr Woods would tell the Network to grow up and give it rest already. He is one of the most gracious athletes of our time and if he's not offended and knows Kelly Tilghman had no intention of offending him perhaps a statement from his camp can put a better spin on an uptight preacher and a Network who can't handle an honest human mistake.
Please Mike,
You're missing the point entirely.  It doesn't matter if Al Sharpton commented on this or not (or you for that matter)--"lynch" in case you didn't know is a word that most of America DOES associate with racism.  What a self-righteous position you take--you are referring to books and there are people who have had this term not only used but applied in the worst way to members of their families--not because they were some ne'er-do-wells, but because they were black.  That's it.  Much like the term concentration camp refers specifically to the persecution of Jews during WWII.  She not only deserved a suspension for being so irresponsible with her words, she's lucky she kept her job.
Thanks for your column Mike.

Some sense out of the nonsense!

Great article. That is really pathetic of the Golf Channel. And Sharpton is a racist based on his knee-jerk reaction to what any white person says.
Bravo!!
I am sorry, but I see nothing in Miss Tilghman's remarks that could or should be caterogized as racist. And certainly Mr. Sharpton and others of his ilk have no credibility.  They are flame-throwers and will use any excuse to 'get headlines'.  Miss Tilghman's apology should have sufficed, no other action on The Golf Channel was necessary.  Weak kneed GC executives should be ashamed of themselves - I ask, "Was Mr. Woods offended?" From all reports he was not and took the comments in their totality and not parsed to find outrage....good for him...there seems to be a shortage of common sense throughout the media..I know Miss Tilghman will survive this episode and I will miss her commentary during her enforced absence.  The Golf Channel should be ashamed....

Mike, I am a fan of yours and regularly read your postings, but I believe that you are absolutely wrong on this one.  As you acknowledged the term is offensive to people in general, and to African-Americans, especially. But the reality is not only is Tiger an African-American, he is also the only (readily recognizable) African-American in golf, and thus, is not just a personal attack, but is almost an indictment on the entire race. The words are, without a doubt, hurtful. But in this climate of hate where nooses, seemingly from a bygone era, are popping up everywhere from New York City's Columbia University to Louisiana, as if they are part of the latest trend, such language is unfortunate and untolerable. Now I don't believe she's a racist.  I believe she meant it innocently in the colloquial term and in an odd way as a flattering remark. But as these past few months have shown, we as a country are not yet ready to move forward. Those that would use a noose to lynch are still among us and are willing to follow through on their threat. As a result, the non-punishment of this anchor will be a sign that we as a country tolerate not just her comments, but the use of a noose as a method of terror and fear. As good Americans, we cannot let that stand. She should not be fired. Her choice of words were poor at best. She has apologized and she should be forgiven. Frankly, as an African-American, Mr. Sharpton is flat wrong. Her comments when taken in context do not rise to the level of what Don Imus said to the girls of my alma matter. The malicious intent just was not there.
Even today, I do not associate the term "lynching" as a racial slur and I'm a 66 year old physician.  You are right in that the Golf Channel has reacted to Al Sharpton, who is no mental giant, and in my opinion is more racist than any of those he has accused. This rediculous issue, with the help of the media, will now take on a life of its own, and Al Sharpton, once again, draws attention to himself while injuring another.
Amen.  Thank you.  Wrote to the Golf Channel producers yesterday and said the same (not as eloquent).
You really summed it up well.  My personal experience is similar to yours - I did not hear of lynching in a racial context until much later in life.  With each new witch hunt, the Reverend Al Sharpton makes himself less relevent to constructive racial dialogue.
I guess Ms Tilghman and Mr.Celzic forgot to make an American history course in college.
It is just ignorance rampant even though Kelly graduated from Duke.
Thank you for saying what most people think.
Thanks for the article.  I believe everyone already knows Sharpton is a joke.  He grabs attention anyway he can, it's just disappointing that some people aren't educated enough to see him for what he is, an embarrassment to the African American Community.
Al Sharpton is really getting to be a bore....He needs to get a life - obviously he doesn't have one, or at least not one that's worth anything....maybe he could use some of his passion to help those who are really in need instead of being the self-serving wannabe he has become.....Maybe he should see Dr. Phil - they seem to be very similar - full of themselves....gonna save the world.....NOT!!!  How could The Golf Channel take anything the Rev says seriously - shame on them for not backing their employee, especially when the person who's causing all the trouble is not the least bit credible...I'm sure Tiger and Kelly are on the same page where this is concerned and certainly capable of taking care of any issues/non-issues they might have.....
well said.
People like Al Sharpton are the ones that help festor the racial divide in this country what does he do for a living I watch Golf channel & it was not meant to be the way Mr. Sharpton says, he needs to monitor all the Rap songs & the rappers.
Mike hit the nail on the head. Sharpton is the biggest bigot of all, and he has done more to incite racism in this country than any other single individual (though you could throw Jess Jackson on the table and make a heck of an argument). The only one who was lynched here was Kelly, and it was Sharpton who kicked the chair out from under her. Are we ever going to start ignoring pious fools like Sharpton and his ilk, or will we continue to make good people feel foolish for their honest mistakes in order to appease their racist blood-lust?
Hear, hear.  Very well said, and I cannot agree more. Shame on Al Sharpton and on the Golf Channel for humoring him.
Are you out of your mind?  If it were a derogatory about a Jewish person, then she would have been  fired by now.  Think about her choice of words ... "lynch in a back alley"... hello... African Americans were lynched for hundreds of years... there's a racist connection...and Tiger is an African American.  Why does it have to be spelled out for you to understand it was clearly inappropriate.  It doesnt have to offend you to be offensive. I'm all for Freedom of Speech but prejudicial comments have no place in a professional, live broadcast.
Wow Mr. Celizic, well said.

I find it highly ironic that A. Sharpton got so up in arms about the word "lynch" when a lynching is exactly what he call for for Kelly Tilghman.

A. Sharpton should be ashamed of himself for politicizing this innocent choice of words when there is so much actual racism going on in our world.

Sharpton, either find a legitimate cause to champion for or get a life.

If it doesn't bother Tiger then it is none of Al's business. Maybe instead of criticizing everything that has black, white implications he should get out their and help white people and black people alike by teaching them not to do things like this. All he ever does is jump on the racial bandwagon. Hey Al, ask yourself this- What will people remember you for when your time is up? Aid for the less fortunate? no. Helping people learn the value's, ethics and the common sense of taking care of each and every person we come in contact with? absolutely not. You will be remembered for being a racial bandwagon whiner who only come out of the woodwork to gripe about Black people being mistreated. Instead of griping publicly about it why don't you remain anonymous and schedule a meeting with the people who are responsible for this ignorant behavior and counsel them in a unbias way and then thank them for having an open ear and listening to you and thank them for their time. Be proactive Al, Not Reactive. It's best for all of us, Black or White. We all bleed red.....
She should have been fired on the spot.  Statement may have inspired some phyical action against Tiger.  At best it was a stupid remark and shows she has no class or breeding.
You hit the nail on the head ! Sharpton is an idiot if he thinks Kelly meant anything racist . I heard his comments on CNN and it almost left me speechless the absurdity he was saying . I feel most fortunate that I don't have to listen to his ramblings on a regular basis ! Shame also to the Golf Net for their uncalled for reaction to what really is a non issue . Oh well just another Jerry Springer wannbee !
I find it so interesting how white people or people in general trivalize or minimize othe people's feeling. The word "lynch" when used in association with African-American has a very negative connotation in our community. You don't have to understand it, to respect it. Who are you to decide what people should and should not find offensive? What she said was plain in simple in poor taste and unacceptable. Had she said "mug him in a back alley" you're right, no reaction but she didn't. It's the difference between being polite and being rude. The word "lynch" simply has a more personal meaning to African-American, much the way I'm sure "gas-chamber" has to Jews. They're not just words, they conjure up emotions associated with death, hurt and pain. I would say I was disappointed in your comments, but that would suggest that I expected something much more!
I grew up in the south during the 50's.  Like you, I associate lynching more with the old west.  If it had been said about a white player nothing would have happened.  It is time for people to stop being so thin skinned.  Consider the intent behind the comment.  It did not bother Tiger, it should not bother Al.
