If Shaq stays healthy, Suns could win title

Posted: Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:58 PM

Shaquille O’Neal is one of the greatest centers ever to play the game. I don’t think there’s any argument about that, and it was confirmed 11 years ago when he was chosen as one of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time. So why is he going to his fourth team, having been traded by two teams that didn’t see themselves winning anymore with him playing center?

The man has four rings, so he doesn’t stink. And he paid off for both the Lakers and the Heat with titles. But that was then. Now, at age 35, you have to wonder what the Suns hope to get out of him.

Check out the numbers; there’s not a lot left in the Diesel’s tank. For all his crowing at his press conference today, he played in just 39 games last year and 58 the year before. This year, he’s been injured again.

He says he’s n fine shape, and I’ve no reason to doubt him. But being in shape doesn’t equate to being durable. And while 35 isn’t old, for a man his size whose body has taken the pounding his has, he’s not young, either.

I don’t blame the Suns for going after him. They’ve had great teams, but the lack of a big defensive presence inside has hurt them in the playoffs. If they’d gotten to the NBA Championship series in recent years, they wouldn’t be looking for a big center. They need help, no question about it.

And Shaq is available, so there he is in Phoenix. Now, he’s got to deliver, a prospect I’m sure he relishes.

But he’s a role player now, not the guy the offense revolves around. He may not even be able to play the end game – hack-a-Shaq and all that. But he’ll certainly give the Suns a different look if he shares the center position with Amare Stoudemire.

And he’s going to have to share. Shaq’s physical history is such that the Suns have to nurse him through the stretch run, limit his minutes, make sure he stays healthy. If they can do that, he may be the piece they need – nothing else has worked for them. If he can’t, this will go down as an enormous mistake.

Tune in again in June, and I’ll tell you which it is.

Shaq is an All Star . I am sorry to see him leave Miami. We owe him alot.
I can tell you what the Shaq deal is already -- an enormous mistake.  The man will be 36 in March, he is overweight and breaking down, he no longer is a defensive presence in the middle, and on offense he will serve only to clog the lane; not provide a viable scoring option.  Steve Kerr is a fool.
Check again in June??  How about tune in again in 2 to 4 weeks and see if Shaq is on the court or in physical rehab!
The road to the championship goes through San Antonio this year and then Los Angeles in future years.  The Laker's could see between his attitude, weight that the best of Shaq was in the past.  He was a dominant figure and will have his moments but not worth $40,000,000.  Bad trade over the next 2 1/2 years.
Placing Shaq in the Suns lineup is akin to placing an old Clydesdale in the Kentucky Derby!!
Hey, this might be a silly question, but it's slightly related to this story. Does Shaq go back and play for the Miami Heat when they have to replay the last 50 seconds against the Atlanta Hawks in March?
Mike,
Just wanted to thank you again for what you did for Art Monk.  You're the man!
I see this as a huge win for both teams. Miami makes cap room to go after a big free agent in the off season.  That combined with the top 5 draft pick should make Riley, who is great at rebuilding, very happy. As for the Suns, I think this is a major plus for them right now.  Adding shaq gives them a center that will dominate in most matchups. Sure Shaq is getting older, but don't underestimate the fire that is still burning in Shaq for another championship.
Despite all his rings, Shaq seems to have a chip on his shoulder. This will in fact help him play his best in spite his physical state. But the window is closing fast for the Suns with or without Shaq, and things have to click this year, especially against the Spurs. Otherwise they will not be so happy next year.
shaq is a great player, and no doubt he will have an impact, but i dont think it would be enough to bring the the suns to finals.
Shaq will be just fine, in Miami he had to carry a heavier load on steam that lacked talent/experience.
I don't think it a good deal for the Suns. He's 36 and has been beat up under the basket. He can't run or shoot free throws. Remember Detriot's hack a Shaq. just remember what will happen the play off's. If they make it. I think he will be hinderence instead  a help.
id like to see the  suns   win  but only for NASH  not shaq's   ego
i think shaq is an overated center. what made shaq was his extraordinary size and athletic ability. he never developed his basketball skills as a player.whats made him popular with the fans was his ability to be a clown prince thats gigantic.what happened to shaq happens to people of all walks of life if you don't adapt to change by schooling or training time and people catch up to you and pass you by.shaq's work ethic was never that strong and by not developing his basketball skills and just relying on brute force to be his foundation it was easy for the league to catch up to him and leave him resting on his laurels.so the phoenix suns got the shortend of the stick.
Just when I thought Celizic couldn't be any more basketball illiterate, he pens an op piece like this.

Hey Mike, do us a favor, ok? Learn what defense means in basketball. This isn't professional wrestling. Just because Shaq looks big and bad doesn't mean he can play defense. In fact, he's a rather horrible defender. Go ask someone who actually knows this game about how the pick and roll works, and then interject the name of Shaquille O'Neal. They'll start laughing.

Shaq was a decent defender, but those days are gone. He'd never show on the high pick and roll, and now that he's slower, he's a defensive liability when that simple school yard play is executed. His blocks are slightly up this season, but that has everything to do with slashers coming at him, as Shaq is now perpetually in foul trouble. His rebounding has also suffered, in that he now plays below the rim.
Why all the fuss?  The title will be determined by crooked officials, and and a commish who awards cheap shots.  Shag with Nash and Amare?  It will be great when they play LA.  Great for the ratings that is, and therefore great for the NBA!  By the way, Gasol to the Lakers (for nothing) and Garnett to the Celts?  Shades of Magic to the Lakers and Bird to the Celts.  Remember how the Celts were the only team "smart" enough to realize Bird could be drafted a year early because he was a fifth year senior? And then the Lakers somehow had the first pick in the draft??? Ask Sacramento fans what they think of this deal? Oh, and did D Wade just got fouled again??? Okay kids, can you say WWF?  I knew you could!
That is a good move for the suns i like them alot and he can take us 2 the championship thats all we really needed was a big man and now we got 1 we can take it all the way now baby. This all i got 2 say watch out other teams hear we come. We goin all day way this time im sure if we just work as a team. Well good luck and see if we can take it all the way.
Being a Suns fan no matter if they win or lose AND a Steve Kerr fan (University of Arizona)I am concerned that the trade was a mistake. Based on my observation of Shaq's attitude and the attitude of the Suns team, he doesn't appear to fit in with the team. I am hoping Shaq proves me to be incorrect.

I hate to see Shaq leaving Miami coz he brought them a ring ... The misery of Miami is not because Shaq is old and can't score anymore ... its the other players surrounding HIM and 'POOKIE' ... PEOPLE WHO CAN'T SHOOT THE BALL WHILE OPEN (and WORST, ON THEIR OWN HOME COURT, just look at their HOME records and stats) AND GO BACK on DEFENSE ... again, its not Shaq who brought this misery BUT the big shuffle that Riley did last summer ... and with the trade, you're looking for 2 more years before the Heat can bring good stuff again ... coz aside from Shawn and Pookie, who else has proven record ... NOBODY!
Lakers are going nowhere but home in the playoffs.  Just like the last two years.  With Shaq, just give the Suns the ring already.  You all know it is over.
I have 3 names for Shaq's naysayers:  1) Bob Lanier, 2) Wes Unseld and 3) Kareem Abdul Jabbar.  3 oldtimers who could do nothing but bang, dunk and hook when the chanpionship was on the line.  The Sonics had to fight all 3.  And it wasn't easy.  Sikma came away with one title.  The Bullets and Lakers took the other ones.  And if you think the Bucks were a sure thing, then why did the Sonic fans call him Mount Lanier?  Shaq is a sure thing.  Injured, slow, limping whatever.  He's an old lumbering elephant.  Good for only one thing.  The playoffs.
No lose situation for D'Antoni. Get rid of a bad attitude and significant price tag with Marion, coupled with a promotion to GM when Kerr is fired next year after the Shaq bubble pops.
All I can remember about Shaq with the Lakers, in his final two years with them, was him taking long periods of time off during the regular season, waiting for the playoffs, then tanking on those for being out of shape and playing time conditioning, then bitching about not getting the ball...better the Suns to have to look forward to that malady for the next two years, than the Lakers, is my sentiment....
If Shaq can get healthy and the Suns win the title this year it's a win win situation for both teams.  I don't think Shaq will help next year given his age and the physical abuse he's absorbed.  Anything less than a championship this season is a bust for Phoenix.  Miami already won on this deal period.
Shaq is old, and no gas left in his tank for Suns. Big mistake by steve kerr. lakers or Jazz will win the wild western conference
You know, its like Phil (Jackson) said after being asked how Shaq will fit into their scheme. He said,"he'll inbound the ball and wait for them to come back." Shaq was a flake overweight player in L.A.,and,as we have come to find out, in Miami also. The guy will argue, of they win title, that he was the one that got them over the hump. I think that he will actually fracture a decent style. He was never the run and gun in Miami...he sure wasn't in LaLa Land. I am a life long laker fan ,and even I believe that everything goes through San An.spurs. It was a Huge mistake trading away for shaq. Suns just got much older. They better win this year cuz thats all they have with "The Big Broken Wheel"
Yeah, Yeah everyone thinks it was a bad deal, but if you look at marion hated where he was didnt like his role and someone with that attitude you definetly should not keep around, banks is someone that will shine for a minute but diminish in a second, hes not reliable and i say good get rid of him. Now as for shaq, great bring him to the suns that will just open alot play making for him with three point shooters surrounding him, and it is exactly what the suns need for that championship ring THAT THEY DESERVE!!!!!!!!
People forget that it was Dwayne Wade who won the title for Miami. Again people forget that the great Shaq scored only six points the second game of the NBA championship. Can the suns win the title with Shaq sure they can, but it will be inspite of him not because of him.. Shaq of 5 or 6 yrs ago you bet it is a great deal, now, I think the Suns wanted to get something for Marion. If they didnt trade him he would have just left for free agency and what would have they get back?, Nada.  The 36 yr old Shaq is better than nothing.
I think this is good move in the short term. Shaq will an excellent roll player to assist Amare. This is the Sun's intent. Stay tuned
Being in AZ has worked wonders for Grant Hill. I haven't seen him play like this since he left the Pistons. Hopefully, it will do the same for Shaq, and if so, it may be a showdown in the West! Sure he won"t ever be 100%, but even ast 75%, he's still dangerous. If all goes well with Shaq, Spurs vs. Suns, Western Conference Finals, anyone?
I hope the press keeps dogging Shaq. Your building his fire. We know hes not basketball young, but he can handle Bynum/Gasol, Duncan, the Spurs are running on fumes, and the Mavericks have no chance this season. Definitely going to miss Marion in Phoenix, but now Shawn gets a dose of attitude adjustment just like Joe Johnson. Basketball is NEVER about ME, its about WE as in TEAM! Wait til he loses for awhile, he hasnt had that in Phoenix munch. Everyone praised him for todays game against LAL, who else was suppose to get stats, Miami is terrible.
I am very sorry to see Marion leaving the Suns. He has always been one of the most exciting players to watch in the NBA. I only hope Kerr is right and this year is the year the Suns get it done with their first true Big man in their franchise history. I can't wait to see Amare playing where he belongs...
THE SHAQ DEAL WILL WORK, IT MOVES AMARE TO POWER FORWARD AND SLOWS THE GAME DOWN A BIT, THAT WILL ALLOW STEVE NASH TO PLAY MORE MINUTES AND AMARE TO STAY OUT OF FOUL TROUBLE.
Bottom line is the Suns give up WAY too many offensive rebounds (29 against Minnesota a few weeks back, for example). San Antonio starts 2 7 footers, as does Dallas and the Lakers will start 3 when Bynum returns, and they were already manhandling the Suns on the offensive glass. Phoenix couldn't say no to this deal. All they really need out of Shaq is defensive rebounds, protecting the paint from penetrating point guards and a little post play on offense, ie role play, which Shaq has said he's fine wih.

The Suns' window of opportunity is tied to Nash's durability, so 2 years of Shaq is probably enough for this trade to reap whatever fruit it will bear. Pre Nash/D'Antoni, the Suns had Marion and Stoudemore and stunk up the gym, so Nash is the key to any title hopes. Marion and Banks' salaries are roughly equivalent to Shaq's, so it isn't a big salary cap hit, and Marion was going to leave anyway with no compensation for Phoenix. And, Riley called Sarver, not the other way around. As well as Hill has played so far is another reason Phoenix could afford to take the chance.
Only way this trade makes sense is if Suns did not think they could sign Marion.  Riley and Shaq had a great last run.  Let's remeber them both for that.
WELL HELLO EVERYONE

I AM NEW HERE ON THIS SITE. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I AM A BIG FAN OF THE BIG DIESEL AND DWAYNE WADE AN I REALLY HATED TO SEE SHAQ LEAVE MIAMI, BUT THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON AND IF THE SUNS FELL THAT THEY CAN GET A CHAMPIONSHIP FROM SHAQ THEN I AM DOWN WITH IT THERE IS ALOT OF HATES OUT THERE AGAINST SHAQ. BUT BEFORE U START TO JUDGE ON WHAT HE CAN AND CAN'T DO LET JUST SEE. BUT I HAVE FAITH THAT SHAQ WILL SHOW EVERYONE WHO SAID HE COULD NOT PLAY AND HE IS GETTING OLD. LIKE HE SAID U DON'T WANT TO PISS HIM OFF. SO SHAQ SHOW THEM WHAT U R ALL ABOUT THE RINGS PLEASE.

The only good outcome of this whole deal, went in favor of Shaq. He's now with a truly established champinship contending team. Lucky him. In my opnion, the Heat screwed up. He's on that downhill roll i like to call retirement. Bad call Heat. Shaq, have fun ending a Sun. Its okay though, even if you dont play, you'll get a ring.
Shaq only has three months to do something..Next year he will be completely unmotivated to help the Suns but will get waived if they don't win it this year. It could have been a different story if he had stayed in top shape over the years but unfortunately this has not been the case. Oh and look out Phoenix if Shaq's ego starts to kick in
I like the move Kerr made from the standpoint that Phoenix was consistently getting beat on the boards and when you look at the teams they are competing with, they all have big men that could control the paint. The Suns had nobody there. I guess if Shaq was the only guy available it's a good move, but I would have tried for someone else because he's so old and injured.

Phoenix is not a young team. Shaq will be 36, Nash, 34, Hill, 36, Raja Bell, 32, Stoudemire, 26. Only one starter in his twenties, OMG! Average age of starting line is 32.8. That is old folks. If you look at last year's Spurs: Ginobili was 30, T Parker was 25, Duncan 31, Bowen 36, Oberto, 32. That's an average age of 30.8. If you look at this year's Spurs they look old and slow and clearly starting to show their age. My biggest concern with Phoenix is age, traditionally, older teams do not win the championship: see age of New England Patriots defensive backfield.
Ok, everyone seems to make this big salary deal with Shaq.  but it could not have been that big of a difference to exchange marion and banks contract for shaq's.  Now, his debut night Phoenix vs LA did higher numbers than American idol folks......thats over 30 million viewers, show me a time when the spurs have EVER done that, finals included...Even if he doesnt help them to a championship, lets face it shaq puts asses in the seats weather he is 36 or 86.  So i applaud Kerr, what appears to be a risky move, it either going to win a championship or it not.  But if not, i betcha they sell more tickets
