Howard insults all Americans, black and white

Posted: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 5:37 PM

Josh Howard is a heckuva basketball player and probably a decent enough guy. But can somebody get this guy a common-sense implant before he talks himself out of the best job a man can have?

I’m sure you’ve seen the YouTube video in which Howard tells someone with a camera that he doesn’t do the National Anthem because, “I’m black.” He says this while the song is playing in the background before a charity touch football game sponsored by Allen Iverson.

The reason Howard was at the game helping out a charity is because he’s a highly paid and fairly famous basketball player. It’s a job he got by virtue of growing up in the United States, where kids can grow up to be millionaires without the benefit of knowing a thing about the world they live in.

Sure, he worked hard at his craft, but without the United States, there’s no NBA, there are no shoe contracts, there are no multi-million dollar contracts. There’s not even a YouTube to keep the world informed of his every profundity.

Look, if you don’t want to sing the anthem for any reason, I’ll respect that as an expression of free speech. If you want to sit while it’s played, I’ll give you credit for making a statement, but suggest that there may be better ways to do that. But to joke and talk during the song and to babble some nonsense about not participating because you’re a member of a certain ethnic group or even a religion is wrong. If you are going to protest, do it with dignity. Don’t make a joke of it.

It’s clear Howard hasn’t thought this through, just as he hasn’t thought a lot of things through. Again, he seems like a pretty decent guy. I actually applauded when he said on the radio that he sometimes smokes marijuana. It’s about time somebody admitted it. Heck, even Sarah Palin said she used to smoke it. If more people ‘fessed up, we wouldn’t have to spend billions of dollars a year and ruin thousands of lives for the “crime” of smoking an herb that has never caused a documented death through overdose, a drug that was outlawed for no good reason to start with.

But then he got cited for drag racing on a public highway. That’s another act of sheer stupidity. People in his position shouldn’t be drag racing on the streets. If he wants to test his car against someone else, he can pay both their entry fees at a local drag strip -- $25 a car ought to cover it. But doing it in the street? Doesn’t he know he can lose that fabulous job that allows him to act like a knucklehead?

And now this with the National Anthem. He doesn’t “celebrate” it because “I’m black?”

What is that supposed to mean? Is he saying that blacks get a raw shake in this country, so he’s making a protest? If so, how about saying that. But if you’re going to say that, explain to me how a man with African heritage is running for President. And explain how Oprah Winfrey is one of the most powerful opinion molders in the country. Then tell me how a black woman got to be Secretary of State, a job she took over from a black man.

I’m not suggesting the hood is good place to grow up. It’s not. But don’t tell me there aren’t opportunities for everyone in this country, whether it’s a black guy raised by a single mom or a white, moose-hunting hockey mom. The real point is, you have to take advantage of those opportunities. If you sit around whining about how everybody’s picking on you, you’re going to have a miserable life.

What Howard, a handsomely paid and admired star, said is an insult to every American, black and white. It’s an insult to the nation that made it possible for him to act with such stunning lack of common sense.

The country gives you a chance, and it’s a lot better one than you’ll get just about anywhere else. Look around at what you have, Josh. Think about where it came from. Then get back to me on the anthem.

Josh Howard will be a "marked man" in every NBA arena in this great country called the USA! What he did has to be one of the highest forms of STUPIDITY that there is! Mark Cuban doesn't seem to be handling this situation too well either. I think a lot people have lost respect for him, not to mention nucklehead Howard, who I have lost ALL respect for!!
I APPLAUD JOSH HOWARD FOR HIS STATEMENT. THERE IS STILL RACISM IN THIS COUNTRY;HENCE THE DISPARITY IN THE PRISON POPULATION, PAYSCALE FOR BLACKS COMPARED TO WHITES. KUDOS JOSH HOWARD KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Mike: you hit the nail on the head!  Josh Howard will lose a whole lot of love for his dumber than dung comment.  Smoking herbs are one thing, but denigrating the national anthem BECAUSE you are an African-AMERICAN is jsut plain suicide for a public figure.  Get ready for cups of ice to be thrown at you, as well as many slurs and negative comments, Josh.  In a way, you deserve it!
Well said. You said it perfectly. Joshn is still young and have more phases in life to go through. Some people say the wrong thing to make a statement as if they don't care, when they are really hurting inside. Josh loves America. He knows he is a blessed man in a bless United States. He's probably a very giving guy and it hurts him because he cares so much for people and their opinions. We have backward ways of doing things at times. We are all human. We will recover from his statement. He's an honest man- give him credit for that.
I'm not sure about the rest of America but I'm getting sick and tired of hearing,I don't do this or that because I'm black". I'd love to hear what Dr.Bill Cosby and Gen. Colin Powell have to say about this subject. I'm guessing that they would have some pretty strong statements about Mr.Howard's beliefs and actions.
Walk in his shoes, from birth to now.  Then comment from that perspective.  The awesome tendency is to start the justice or justifiable clock when it's convenient.  Have you ever tried to pick something up in a swimming pool.  The water bends the light, but the object is still the object.  Having said that, I understand why you have your opinion and I respect that.
Sometimes we get to witness the most arrogant, ignorant comments ever uttered because we live in the instant communication age. This man's commentary was neither thought out nor well spoken.  The only reason it makes any impact at all is because he can put a ball through a net better than most. Shame on us for giving ignorance an audience.
Ok, Mike, Josh is immature and naive, but much more sophisticated than you give him credit.  It is obvious that you are a white, middle-to-upper-class pundit that know little about the black social pyschic.  I believe  that you are an intelligent man.  To gather some insight for yourself, please read the report(survey) put out recently by the researchers at Stanford U. concerning the racial bias and attitudes of whites in America toward blacks and the linking of voter attitudes toward Senator Barack Obama, and apply this to Josh Howard, if you understand.
I have more of a problem with Mike statements then I do with the spolied basketball player.

I am so tired of people repeating the line that America is the land of opportunity, that anyone can make it if they try, etc., etc. Yes, Josh is probably an illiterate that if not for the NBA would be sweeping up somewhere, or practising his only important line of the day, "would you like fires with that?" But this notion that the American dream exists in pure nonsense. This dream is realized for only a small fraction of us; the vast majority have no american dream, nor will acsend to a higher socio/economic class than that to which they were born. To demonstrate that America is a boon for blacks by citing the success of a handful is sheer stupidity. Take a ride through Detroit sometime Mike. Or D.C., then come back and tell me about opportunity.
You want to lecture Josh? than do so with credible arguments, like character, integrity, compassion, empathy, and just plain being nice.
If you value individualism and independence, why should you judge? Since your grandfather could vote, drink from any fountain he pleased and go to the college of his choice while his forbears could not, he might have some righteous resentment you have no empathy for. He had to become an NBA star to become worthy of your notice. Any jerk can type. Maybe he can't sing.
As an African American Female, I am appalled at Josh Howards comments.  He does not represent the African American people and never will.  He obviously knows nothing about the history of this great country and promiment african americans that contribute to it.  I'm proud to be an american and someone should give this moron a clue for making such as asinine comment.
He should offer an apology to all americans.
Let me just correct you on a few points:

Josh Howard feels as do many other young black men in America, disenfranchised. Hell, we were never really franchised in the first place.  You have several flaws in your logic.  Number one being, the NBA is a international conglomerate that makes BILLIONS of its "products" namely players.

It's not the "greatest job in the world unless you consider running 10-15 miles in all out sprint matching up physically against somebody who you weight and size.  Then triple the typical college basketball season and the hidden fact that by the end of training camp, half these guys are playing with strains, broken limbs and getting treatment around the clock, etc. Trust me, it is not as you say, "great".

These guys do this because they want money but let's break down the money angle of it too.  If you are in the top income bracket of the U.S. You are getting taxed at 33-35%, so $1,000,000 is really $700k or less, then there is your agent's %10 you are at around $600k for every million you sign for.  Then, silly fans expect you to half gazillions of dollars and that you can save it all, but honestly Open Mike, where are you going to live if you are a multimillionaire? In the hood? Really? Safely? Enter the million dollar house. I will concede Mike Tyson was and is SPECIAL, what with tigers and all, but you get my point. And you have to drive a certain vehicle of better, at least $35000 and up.

So considering that most guys on these sports teams are living beyond their means at the onset of their careers, its a no-win situation that I nor should anyone else really envy.  These guys are being paid millions of dollars (the top 3 guys per team), but that doesn't mean they will have anything to show for it at the end of the day.65% of NBA players are broke at the end of five years Mike. Dream job?

Now on to the black issue.  I wish that White people as a whole would stop trying to treat other ethnicities as if we are strange group of people that are telepathically linked or share common philosophies.

Speaking in this case as an African American male, I am not especially impressed with Josh Howard's actions nor do I defend him or his words.  However, I understand the LOGIC behind his verbiage and behavior. First, most African American men have what I refer to as immaturity.  It's not racism.  The immature black man is fascinated by shiny things like rims, and microphones, and glossy lipstick on women, cars, bling-bling and so forth just like babies with a rattle.  I can be silly and PLAY with these things, but I can also discern between fantasy and reality. Some people can not tell the difference between the two..........

The mindset that would publicly announce "I'm black" is attention wanting and attention getting.  Immaturity.  Let's not lump all black men into this though, just like I should not lump all children snatching cannibalistic crimes in with white men.  Just because 99% of serial killers are white males, should I avoid them entirely?  This imperialistic way of judging other cultures does not imply intelligence or fairness, or good moral judgement in the least sense.  I have to tell you that white america has one way of viewing the world and everybody else sees it differently.
Like have you noticed or tried to observe that even the smallest critique of white america gets immediately lambasted and fired upon as ridiculous? Blacks are the same way. But white people control the media.  But in my opinion, black people as a whole group need psychological help and guidance. So to sum up my entirely too long tirade: Josh Howard is immature, not unpatriotic or racist.  If he doesn't like America, he probably can afford to leave and retire comfortably anywhere he wants. He's still here so there's something here he likes. What, who knows, and white society needs to stop associating us together unless they would like to be publicly judged the same exact way.  Grow up.

If more people ‘fessed up, we wouldn’t have to spend billions of dollars a year and ruin thousands of lives for the “crime” of smoking an herb that has never caused a documented death through overdose, a drug that was outlawed for no good reason to start with.
Nice opinion - sounds like you're in love with the herb yourself Mr. Celizic
A guess is eventhough his "brother" Dwight Howard went to the Olympics to help win a gold medal, perhaps Josh wasn't chosen because - even then - he didn't know the words to the U.S. National Anthem, but the excuse "I'm Black"?  Lame, Josh, lame.
He is welcome to live in a different country and see what opportunities are available elsewhere.  If he really feels that there are some issues in this country (and, of course, there are) he could use his celebrity and money to help fix those issues instead of making a fool of himself.  Black, white or otherwise - we all have a choice to make in regards to the opportunities that come our way and how we conduct ourselves in front of others.  He made a bad choice and maybe the feedback he got from this issue will serve as the wake up call he needs.
I dont feel insulted by what Josh Howard said on youtube, in fact, let me say that i dont celebrate the fourth of July because, I as a black man living in america because im not truly free! there is no independence for me, so why celebrate! Walk a mile in our shoes in see if you feel the same!
When did Mike Celizic get elected to speak for all Americans??  So Mike thinks Josh is biting the hand that feeds a little.  That doesn't mean he's insulted a nation, and Mike by no means has the authority to say so.  Did the Youtube video continue for Josh to explain himself on why he doesn't do the national anthem?  If not, why not do an article with an interview with him to find out vs. calling him out and thinking the worst without knowing the facts?  Sounds like the press....
He has the right to not like the national anthem and say it. The america you see and the america he sees and has problems with is different. You are not black and those words on the anthem may not resignate to him the way it does to you. He is entitled to speak his mind also. You may not agree and that is okay also. Is his character as a decent person on trial with you. Do you know him personally. Intelligent people can agree to disagree and respect the other as a person. Try it some time. Just because you have a voice/column doesnt mean others agree with you 100% either.
Mr. Celizic, It is clear you are just like the multitude of white people in america who feel because a few (and I mean few) black people have broken through major barriers that the barriers do not exist. Oprah herself speaks of many injustices she has endured thanks to the continuous prejudices in this country. I'm sorry you didn't have the blessing of grow up with racism in your face everyday. Being white has given you this smug white on life attitude. It is hard for Barrack, Oprah, black people of Jasper, TX, and all other black people in this country everyday. We have to dismiss the many points of racism we face daily just to survive and achieve. Keep your back alley comments to yourself when it comes to any black person’s resentment of this country and what it represents. We have to fight for every inch of what we have and all you have to do is walk through the front door and know America is on your side. Yes, black people are successful because we are successful but do not think for a minute we didn't have to fight through many unnecessary obstacles to get there. And believe me, more obstacles than you would every see or can endure. I admire his fearless statement and I admire why. Even if I do not admire many other things Mr. Howard has done or said. But it is not your place or right to judge him because it clearly shows you are either a racist yourself or just plain ignorant.
I see people hiding behind their ethnicity all the time.  How many people run around with Obama for Change shirts that don't know the finer points of his campaign platform?  The truth is that there is a ton of ignorance out there.  At least Josh Howard is a guy that provides me some entertainment by having the skills to play pro basketball.  Let this kid insult the country and have his opinion.  I watch sports to see slam dunks and close games.  The fact that some athletes are dunderheads shouldn't shock anyone.
Thank you very much for the article. Being a veteran of 24 years, i felt like he spat on us veterans who fought for the freedoms we have. Maybe Josh should don a uniform and do a tour in Iraq, then get back with me.
           Mitch
Kim Perkins...you are a moron...plain and simple.  Memories linger???  PLEASE!!!  Josh Howard was born in the '80's...what MEMORIES is he trying to get over???  Don't even give me that crap about lots of whites refusing to serve in the military either.  The military is primarily white and millions (like me by the way) have proudly served and will continue to do so!!!  Now admit it...your an Obama supporter...aren't you???
Josh Howard is a full fledge jerk...I'm glad I don't watch the NBA League of Thugs
Stop hating on JH people! It's a free country! He can say what he wants wheather it pisses people off or not. Thats why so many have died for this country and its why I defend it, for the many freedoms we have and one of them is speech.
How does Josh Howard's comments relate to you as a veteran? He chose basketball - you chose the military. There is no draft today - so shut up!
I have no sympathy for you if you went Iraq - it goes with the territory. In this country, white America made NBA players/sports a wealthy career. Now that many blacks are taking advantage of this career/system, it is a problem. Since when did Bob Cousy or Larry Bird win a MENSA award. Who said that athletes had to be eggheads. They get paid to be athletes, not operate on an aneurysm as I do. So to all of you - live with the system that white America created!! If you feel it is an insult to you then do not support him, just as he wishes not support you or the anthem. If he made 40K instead of millions we would not be having this discussion.
Mike,
Good essay.  It's about what 'everyone else' considers respect.  What Howard did was inexcusable.  This comes from a guy born in 1951, came of age in the 60's and has learned that this country can move in the wrong direction.

I have been until this year doing my 'community service' (not really but it sometimes seems like it)by being a soccer referee.  Local recreation leagues (for free) up to high school (losing money due to high gas prices) in the heart of the bible belt / crotch of false patriotism.  Protocol deems that the referee and assistant referees stand together and face the flag during the playing of the national anthem.  This I do.  However, I do not place my hand over my heart nor look at the flag during this ceremony.  This is my protest.  It's about the way I have seen my country disregard even the constitutionally procted liberties of it's own citizens.  I've never had anyone say a word to me about my perceived disrespect.  Especially not from the spectators, at least two-thirds of whom are laughing and talking during this totally symbolic ritual.

It's one thing to have a "private" demonstration but to bring this into the national spotlight is at the very least STUPID.  Especially when you depend on the collective opinion of the masses to continue to suck every last nickel you can from the "American Dream".  You made some good points too.

Hey Howard, America, Love or Leave it! don't let the door hit you on the way out.
people blowing this ish way out of proportion.
I LOVE TO PLAY AND WATCH BASKETBALL, ESPECIALLY, THE NBA. UNFORTUNATELY, I'M NOT TALENTED ENOUGH TO PLAY AT SUCH A HIGH LEVEL. SO MAYBE NEXT TIME I'M AT A NBA GAME, ESPECIALLY; A GAME IN WHICH JOSH HOWARD IS PLAYING, I SHOULD "PROTEST" THE NATIONAL ANTHEM BECAUSE I CAN'T PARTICIPATE BY PLAYING IN THE GAME ITSELF.....DUMB DOES AS AS ONE SEES DOING DUMB.
By no means do I support Josh Howard's behavior, but statements like these: "explain to me how a man with African heritage is running for President. And explain how Oprah Winfrey is one of the most powerful opinion molders in the country. Then tell me how a black woman got to be Secretary of State, a job she took over from a black man", show apathy and misunderstanding of people like you.  Just because their are a handful of black people that have attained success does not mean one should ignore inequalities that all black people still experience in this country.  There are severe inequalities, from income, education, conviction rates, infant mortality, and even life expectancy.  Every time I read an article and someone makes this type of statement, it reminds me of why racism will always be synonymous with America.
