I've commented a couple of times before when I had a bone to pick. This time, you're firing dead center.

The only thing I might have added is that is "VY" (as he's known in town} might have to adjust his lifestyle if playing football for a living is 'too hard'. You're right on this one. He's obviously been pampered ever since somebody recoginzed he could play. Read the reader comments on the Nashville Tennessean web site to see that even 'fans' see this for what it is and they don't appreciate a whiney-ass-cry-baby.

Great Article. This drama is evidence of why people would like to see these athlete's stay in school all 4 years. It is a very difficult to deal with fame, fortune and, ultimately, the negative's that come with it.

Vince Young has not progressed and has not continued to improve during his time in the league. He came on the scene strong because of his one great college year and people expected him to be the next Michael Vick..Let's all hope he gets his head on straight and doesn't go down that path.
I don't think he will ever be a great quarterback in this league, but Matt Lienart is not proving his worth either..

Thanks for pointing out how idiotic this entire thing has become. The Titans invested a lot of time and MONEY into Vince and now that he is a 3rd year starter the fans and I am sure the team are ready to see him hold up his end of the bargain by playing solid football.

I respect that his Mom loves him and I hope she can help him use the next couple weeks off to grow up and realize that nobody is picking on him, but that it's all part of being a Pro in the NFL and he can either start playing like everyone thinks he can, or go home with his Mom and nobody will say anything bad to him.

The man is just terrible and no one wants to admit it. The Titans have all the other ingredients to be a great team, but winning in the NFL is predicated on good QB play, not to mention sound decisions in the front office. Cutler played in their back yard for four years and they ignored him. Young is gifted athletically but does not have what it takes to play QB in the NFL. Wide receiver or defensive back. I saw Vince play while he was at UT and know what a competitor he is. However, that didn't mean he still didn't get booed by Texas fans when he was a redshirt freshman (even a game as a sophomore). What did he do? He took it upon himself to work to get better, and brought the team closer together along the way. Texas then proceeded to win 2 BCS bowls and a National Championship. I think this is why you normally see rookie quarterbacks in the NFL sit out for a few years. It is a lot of pressure to have the whole weight of the franchise on your shoulders immediately, no matter how talented you are. I think Vince will bounce back, physically and emotionally. While he is out, can we maybe find him a receiver to throw to when he gets back?

I have to think that many players say things in the heat of the moment in private when they get booed or make mistakes on the field.

i bet even Brett Farve, early in his career, probably spouted a few obscenities about fans who booed him in teh privacy of his home. after the emotion wore off, he got back out there and played his heart out for those same fans. it's just emotions and testosterone at work. the difference is that Brett's wife or mom or sister or whomever he confided in didn't run to the press.

i dont think Vince did anything wrong here, i think his mother comming forward is the problem. i'm sure if i ever got booed by people i was making an effort to entertain, i'd be POed too. and i may vent to a trusted family member or friend. hopefully it would stay there, unlike Vince's mom who told the press.

I take exception to a few generalizations in this story. First and foremost, I don't care about Vince Young or his Mother and I'm sure there are people out there that feel the same way. Why is it that we all of a sudden have to have deep emotional feelings for athletes and actors or anyone outside my circle of family and friends. The world won't end if he never plays another down nor will it greatly improve if he does. Secondly, this guy needs to grow up and act like a man. So he gets booed. Rex Grossman knows what that's like, so does every QB that played for Miami last year. If he played better, he wouldn't get booed. I used to have a total lack of respect for Bo Jackson when he would take himself out of a football game, any time someone hit him just a little bit hard. But I got to thinking about it...At least he didn't head to the sidelines and pout like a three year old.

Great athlete, strong arm, but not a quarterback who can drop back in the pocket and throw accurately. Young ran a simple offense geared to his athletic ability in college, but it doesn't work in the NFL, and Young hasn't adjusted to that. No wonder he's pouting about that.

Unlike the world of celebrities who go into rehab for a hang nail, average Americans and celebrities suffer from depression. Contrary to the comments made here it is a real disease and people do take their lives. It is no wonder people do stupid things instead of coming forward. That is why their are a number of domestic incidents in this country or people going berserk and killing others. I am not defending him, but as I commented a couple of days ago, the Titans didn't call the police because he was down after the game, they called because of what was just released today to the press. He had mental health issues. Hopefully he takes a leave of absense to get his life back together much like another NFL player did this summer, can't remember his name, or the actress Kirsten Dunst did very quietly a couple months ago. Mental illness is serious business.

You know, a millionaire makes as much money in one year as most "everyday" people make in their lifetiimes? In VY's case, he makes as much money in one year as 10-15 people combined make in their lifetime. Then he gets another fresh 10-15 peoples' lifetime incomes the next year, and the year after that. Hello? Go out and do some volunteer work with real people, develop a whole life and then you'll be itching to get back into the shoes of a gifted athlete for the practice sessions and the games. Let's just be thankful the man isn't off doing against the law extracuricular activities. Come VY, (and endless multimillionaire athletes) put the whole pkg. together. Either they do what they are paid to do & succeed or they crumble and continue the only way of life they know. Kids growing up these days look to these athletes as a way for fame & or fortune. This mindset of 'I want the money and who needs an education because money does it all' has filtered down to our colleges, high schools and sadly to our youth. Too many owners, coaches and many fans care only about the W regardless of the behavior. Vince & so many others will either grow into successes or they will see the door sooner than later. People should back off of Vince Young - if he's suffering from depression, then he's suffering from a medical condition. Depression is not a character flaw, or a weakness. Suggesting that Vince Young has a 'bad attitude' or that he needs to quit 'sulking' misses the point. That's like telling someone they just need to think positively to beat cancer. Depression (and mental illness in general) can be very debilitating for those who suffer from it - this is coming from someone who knows.

And despite that, or because of it, comes out this incredible guitar accompaniment that is the fruition of years of sucking it up and putting in the dues to be able to play like that inspite of all the blues and the lack of funds, which NEVER gets any better.
From this point of view, NFL QB'so r NBA PG, or any sports millionair ain't got a let got stand on.
VY, give more of your money away to charity, play for a whole year (career) for a measely $75,000 a year. That's right. Only earn what the superstars of yesteryear made. And still they sucked it up and played the game without these type of incidents.

I wonder if race has anything to do with the way the media has handled this situation??? I think the media has been very harsh on Young. Did we forget Farve and the addition to pills or Kerry collins with the alcohol issue? If I recall Terry Bradshaw had the same experience when playing for the Steelers and he managed to over come and lead the team to numerous Super Bowls. I feel that the media always over exagerates any situation when it includes atheletes who are African-American. I do agree that Young needs to grow up but cut the kid some slack.
We need to remember he is a talented athelete and his talent is what got him into the league. He has had several Offensive Coordinators who have tried to change his mechanics rather than let him use his natural abilities. If Young can keep his mom quiet I truly believe he will be fine and the media should just let it go.

I've rooted for teams over the years both good and bad and when they do well I cheer, when they don't I encourage or shout exasperation but I never boo. Can someone tell me what purpose booing serves?
