We had a Cinderella season to win the title. Our coaches were professional material and many went on to coach in the NFL but those coaches exploited the black players and share little connection to these players who help put the school on the map and reaped the financial benefit from a bowl game. Colleges all over the nation have closed their eyes ignored black coaching talent. We have a long way to go to wash out racism but it is easy to hate and ignore but it take courage to stand up and Mr. Barkley as well as the writer showed their courage today... If racism was so rampant in the decisions, do you really think Sylvester Croom would have had a job in MISSISSIPPI?!?! Being from MS, I know a LOT of State fans and they all loved him last year, but if you lose the Egg Bowl that bad, you're out.

Do you think it was racist to get rid of a winning coach like Tuberville? It should be obvious by that action that winning percentage is not all Auburn is looking at. He beat Bama the last 6 years - lose 1 year and you're done?

If you want to start throwing the race card for coaches, we should throw it for players and get more white players on the field. Sounds dumb right?!?! That's because it is - the coach makes the decisions on who plays - based on whatever he decides. Same with the school deciding who coaches.

If racism was such a large part of it, don't you think more white players would be on the field?
Race-baiting is ignorance manifested through writing and speech.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Well said! Turner Gill is a hero in our state and will always be thought of as a Husker. We loved him as a player, coach, and member of our community and we were sad to lose him. He has done a magnificent job at Buffalo (no surprise to all in Husker Nation) and should be considered a top coaching prospect at this point. However, i am so sick and tired of people making the comment that there are only 3 black coaches out of 119 in division 1 and saying that it's racism! It's almost like saying there are not enough white point guards in the NBA and that each team should have a mandatory "5 white guys" draft clause before they can sign a player of color! People, it's not about what color you are, it's about your ability to coach, recruit, teach the game, mentor, represent the community and so many other things. Now i do agree that Turner Gill should have gotten the job because he is deserving and fits all the criteria i mentioned before; he was interviewed, and he was not chosen, they went another direction and just because they didnt choose Turner doesn't mean that their motives had anything to do with being racist. It's funny to me that when these arguments are being made it always seems to be about African-Americans being the victims of racisim (the 3 out of 119 again!)....why aren't we making the same case for Mexican-American coaches, or Native-American coaches, or Asian-American coaches if it is question of racism? The fact is, there are a lot of qualified candidates for all types of jobs and in the end someone will win. Turner Gill is a fantastic coach and will get his shot at a big time program because he is 1) A great coach 2) A great teacher 3) A great person 4) A great recruiter 5) A great communicator and many other reasons..........NOT because he is black!

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Chizik had a horrible record as a head coach...may have been a great coordiantor but Gill has demonstrated real head coaching bona fides...it is Alabama, home to pin heads like Senator Shelby...

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Barkley is and has always been an idiot; doesn't mean what he is saying doesn't contain truth, just that he's an idiot. I hope he runs for Governor of Alabama, so the people here can show him, by our votes, just what we think of him, and that is very, very little.
Gill had a better record, Chiclet had coached at the Barn before. Other than Ty Willingham and Gill, what black coaches have been successful in cfb? It's all about winning, and don't think for a second most colleges won't jump at a chance to hire a winning coach, regardless of color.
I'm not saying race didn't play a part; there was racism in the football program at the Barn earlier this year (why Franklin was fired), and having witnessed the shenanigans of the BOT /AD in the past (jetgate), it would not surprise me in the least. But, even if it was absolutely false and nowhere near the truth, Barkley would say it anyway because he, in fact, is the consummate racist...and a blowhard to boot.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Of course this is something racial. The guy has done a great job. This was the best Auburn could do is hire a guy that is 5-19 to one of the bigger programs in the country. This is a joke. I guess it serves them right to fire Tuberville in the first place. Schools are going nutts. Why fire successful coaches, Phillip Fulmer is a legend and is proven. I don't see Penn State getting ride of there coach Jo Pa. Fulmer should have been able to make the choice to retire. He made Tennesse to a National Power House. He also would have brought them back. The man can coach. Sports in general is into what have you done for me today. NBA perfect example of no loyalty. We are consumed with win, win, win, and win. We have no concern of the character of the program. Tubberville and Fulmer both ran high class programs. Its crazy and the institutions deserve some ruff times. You asked for it.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Mike,
Very good analysis. Now the question is how to correct this situation. It is true that some whites won't support a black coach. Based on performance, Gill has been the better coach. Therefore, you do have to wonder why he was not offered the position as the most qualified and the coach with the proven track record - come on folks, he took the WORSE D1 school in the country and turned them around. Auburn showed their true colors - pun intended - with this hire.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

News flash: Alabama school officials may be racist; details at 11. Does this surprise anyone? Compare the records of the two coaches involved in this flare-up and it's easy to see that Sir Charles is right -- but is easier still to see that it isn't surprising.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

It has absolutely nothing to do with the ignorance of the south. It has to do with the ignorance of the Trustees at Auburn,Jay Jacobs, and the Idiot President at Auburn. Why in this world did you fire Tubberville? and hire at coach with a losing record just because he has ties? Give me a break. Bobby Louder, Spina, and Raines have more say in what goes on at Auburn than anyone. After all Louder is the reason a few others don't have a job at Auburn. Just ask Terry Bowden. As far as Auburn goes I could care less. Being an Alabama fan and living in the heart of CRIMSON TIDE country it's funny to see the panic at Auburn. After all they can't hire the best coach in college football or the SEC. He's taken! In my opinion they did Gill a favor. At least now he has job security. No coach in his right mind should take that job, because he won't be the man running the show. They need someone like Saban to go in there and say "It's my way or I'm out of here." Get rid of the Trustees and Auburn might have a chance of survival. After all if money wasn't an object then why didn't they go after the best? It came down to Coach Chizik's familiarity with the Auburn and the SEC. Also, Gill could not promise he would stay at AU if the coaching job at Nebraska were to come open in 2 or 3 years. Why is AU getting the bad rep. when his own alma matter passed on him last year and Syracuse passed on him this year? Garner from UGA, who is also black, interviewed for the job at AU too. I believe that's more then any of the other schools as far as interviewing miniorities. It's an article that if you didn't write someone else would have as the conclusions are obvious. Barkley had the guts to say it first. You are not breaking any new ground here. That's not what bothers me though.

How can you possibly imply that race was a factor in Syracuse's hiring of Doug Marrone? Did you do any research at all into this or is your statement a weak attempt at solidifying a position that is based as much on opinion as fact? Here are some facts for you that doing a little research would have yielded:
1.) Doug Marrone stated this is his dream job and has been working toward this his entire career.
2.) Syracuse has a history of retaining coaches for an extraordinarily long time, especially in the win-now culture of college athletics. Marrone fits this mold whereas Gill may not.
3.) Marrone is an alumnus of SU.
4.) He is a former football player at SU.
5.) He is as qualified as Gill, being that he is the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.
6.) Marrone has strong recruiting ties in the northeast from his days here.
7.) The last, and most obvious- the athletic director for SU is Daryl Gross. He just so happens to be black!

Your implication that Gill was passed up at SU because he is black is not only wrong, but irresponsible. To say so would be to call Daryl Gross a racist and that makes almost as little sense as your comment itself. You owe the athletic department and fans of Syracuse University an apology!

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Im sick of everytime someone doesnt get hired its a race issue. The bottom line is there are 260 million people in this country and every person of any race, gender, or whatever cant be a coach or a player. Maybe he did get treated unfairly and thats not right but at the same time the more people make that a fuss over it the more people get jaded or angry. Its just a never ending cycle of one side getting angry at the other so they seek revenge then vise versa. But just because he does this all the time does not mean he is wrong all of the time. For once, he is dead right and the numbers don't lie. Get over it. Leave Coach Gill's wife out of this (that is another matter that should be addressed elsewhere).
Division I College football has progressed as far as hockey at any level as far as diversity is concerned and that is nowhere. College presidents, athletic directors and all the boosters and people who choose the football head coaches for these top 110-odd schools across this land, especially in the South (ACC,SEC) and the Midwest (Big Ten, Big 12) are racists, sexists, hyprocrites and bigots. Period.
They are also fools and idots for refusing to install a playoff system within the bowl system to fairly crown a national champion on the field (and make more money for everyone doing it). Yet the players can't even hold a part-time job to have money to go to the movies. Seem fair? The facts don't lie.
I dare you all to prove me wrong. Put your reputations and your money and jobs on the line, and hire a person of color as your head football coach. Give him the same tools to succeed as you do the "good ol' boys" you keep recycling and let's see what happens. The NFL finally did so and a Black man and a Hispanic man has won championships as a head coach, in short order. Same in the NBA. When will the blatant racism end? Obviously, the above examples nor electing a person of color as President of the United States is not enough to change things, so the answer is clearly, never, in this regard. How sad. Coach Gill is better off at Buffalo than dealing with racists everywhere else. Bottom line.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

The Syracuse job never even occurred to me. The number of potential black coaches in the college pipeline is 3.5% what's changed? I've seen blacks with a great coaching personailty passed up for frivolus reasons like coach Gill. I still say besides playing together on the footbal field we have a lot of growing up to do socially. Just like in Pittsburg booster will respond to winner no matter who accompanies him. It's a joke that the only interracial marriage people pay attention to is a black man and white wife. If universities are not going to be the beached to stop this abominable violation of social growth and development them shame on them. Of course it's about race. 98% of the African Americans in our country voted for Obama because he is black, not because his resume was better than McCain's. It works both ways in today's world. So Barkley needs to understand that it is a two way street - if racism helps get a president in the White House, then having a black coach not hired because he is black is part of the same process. Is that equitable? No, but it works both ways. Ask the fast, good white receivers or fast, good white DB's (yes, they are out there!) that would like to get a scholarship to Auburn, but do not because of the color of their skin, what they think of racism. It works both ways in today's society.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

First of all, Charles Barkley is one of the worst racists in the country. His remarks are consistently anti-white. Secondly, why the concern with how many black coaches there are in the NCAA? Why not Hispanic or Oriental? Black coaches will emerge when they begin to consistently produce superior results. I always thought Ty Willingham was a great coach, but after leaving Stanford, he fell flat on his face. Auburn clearly chose the person they thought best fit with their program. They are the ones paying the bill. If Barkley, an Auburn alumni, was so convinced that Turner Gill was the better choice, why didn't he offer to foot the bill for half his salary. That's what other alumni do when they want a change. Instead, Charles would rather spend his bucks in Las Vegas and then complain that his alma mater isn't doing the right thing. Put your money where your mouth is, Mr. Barkley.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Perhaps the media outcry about Notre Dame being racist for firing Tyrone Willingham after "only" 3 years is having a negative effect on the ability of minority coaches to secure head coaching jobs at big-time programs? I believe that Willingham's actual performance at ND justified the firing, but Notre Dame was crucified in the media. (Some people are still harping on it despite TW's subsequent abysmal performance at UW that provide the definitive evidence that he simply is not a very good head coach.) The athletic directors who are hiring head football coaches may not want to take the risk of all the adverse publicity of firing a minority coach after 2 or 3 years of bad performances.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Gill may be a better coach. But as someone stated earlier if the people in the south whom they are recruiting follow Chizik to Auburn and are more welcoming to his presence in their homes than he will be coach.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Iowa State should pick up Gill. Turner Gill is a good coach but winning cures all. He needs to go to the Big 10 or 12 where there is not as many winning schools as the SEC and he can do more. He has no chance competing for recruits against Florida or Bama, LSU, SC, TN, etc. It was a blessing for him not to get picked. It would be interesting to see him go after the same recruits as these schools being a black man, he might have stole a few but being at Auburn probably not. I think he has a better shot at stealing Penn St. and Ohio States recruits. I don't know why anyone would want the Auburn job, The TN job is the same way, You have to beat Bama and Florida and that is going to be a hard job to do..This Chizik fellow will be gown after a couple of years.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

While I do respect Sir Charles' mighty opinion, I don't believe it was about race. Whatever the reason, I believe Auburn made a terrible mistake in hiring basically a loser. I really don't like to hear that every time a black coach doesn't get hired, it's about race. If it is, then we're in a sad state, because the best MAN for the job did not get hired.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

How come when it's a white getting a job over a black it's racism but when it's the other way around it's ok .Racism will never end the blacks won't let it ,I think there was other things guiding their decision that the public dont know .Our new President wouldn't be in without the white vote but how many blacks voted for him just cause he's black now where does racism lay.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

Heard from an insider at Auburn: It wasn't entirely cuz he was black... he has a white wife.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

If West Virginia's Bill Stewart fizzles, I think that it would be wise for WVU to take a good long serious look at Turner Gill. I would hire Turner Gill in a second, you will also not find a beter human Being than Turner Gill bit lets not state somehting as fact when we cant prove it. Could it be the case, of course it could but who knows. Some of you hvae made comments about the south being racist, well to some degree it still is as most of our country but it is both ways, even for my brothers in Nebraska to criticize the south remmber there is a huge difference demographically in say Georgia and Nnebraska.fact is you have good and bad people of all races but before you continue to criticize us live in ur shoes first,, fact is well over 90% of the jails and prisons in the Deep south have minoritie as inmates, you may have a reaon for this but that is a fact, visit the mall and have to cover your childrens eyes and ears, that is a fact. In order to not in flame the issue we should always speak with the utmost responsibility, taking care not to run to racism as the ill the effects all of our societal issues. The coaching position, and any position for that matter, should always be awarded to the best applicant who fits the particular qualifications set forth by the interviewer.
Please be sure to know your facts and take into account our population density and demographics. Race is unkown in Heaven and it does'nt matter if you go to Hell.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

The fact of the matter is there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reasoning when it comes to the coaching changes at Auburn. Only those that make the decisions know why they do what they do.
Both Mr. Celizic and Mr. Barkley are only speculating, and anyone that pays any attention to what they write or say are playing into their game. Neither should make a statement like that unless it is based on fact.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

There is a reason why certain programs will never win. SEC recruiting will be even more of a challenge since, there are even more teams who legimtimately expect to compete for conference titles. However, some of the arguments against Barkely and Celizic, in my opinion only bolster teh negative impact of racial bias on college athletics. Yes, the kids are exploited and many sell out the future an education might warrant.

It is the same old axiom. Black have to perform at a higher level to get the same opportunity as non-minorities. This is true as a player or as a former player who wants to continue their career in sports in another capacity.

Gill, in order to have a shot at a major college program would have to take his credential and serve under a non-minority coach who would then mentor him. Better record? Better credential? Better resume as a former player? All those go to Gill versus the ISU hed coach.

But, that is no different than the criterion to select a QB in one of those programs.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

As a Husker fan, I feel it my duty to remind people that Nebraska also bypassed Turner Gill in its own head coaching hire one year ago. While Bo Pelini also had a limited connection to the program, his one year as def. coordinator in 2003 hardly compares to the two decades of association Turner had as a player and assistant coach. Gill is a quality guy, but one good season in a lower-tier conference may not justify the big chair (yet). If he can do it next year the offers will come from everywhere.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

W. Middle class white kids get passed over for scholarships that are handed out to African Americans with much lower SAT scores simply to diversify. Somehow that does not seem fair. When the coach does not get hired because they may do well in some of the living rooms for recruitment that is a valid reason. Obviously on paper and results wise Gill is the better choice. I actually think this is going to help bring this problem to the forefront and help the diversity cause. He will be better off also. But it has to be fair. If someone works hard and deserves something they should get the job. In the case of the scholarships it should be similar, instead of lowering our standards to meet lower score levels, we should hold everyone equally accountable. If not it is a poor lesson to teach our young that even though you worked hard, your not the right color. I know that is the way it was and obviously with Gill, still may be, but it has to change for everyone. And I really hope no one gives me the 400 years speech. None of my caucasian ancestors owned or were here in America when slavery was around. We worked our way to the lower middle class ranks and are stuck here because of the economic system. We make too much and are the wrong color to get it for free, and not enough to be able to afford it by ourselves.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

oh please, get off your "race card" high horse people. FACT: 2004 when Auburn went undefeated, CHIZIK was your defensive coordinator. Fact: When Chizik was Auburn's D.C., Auburn's defense was top 5 EVERY YEAR. Fact: recruiting is a HUGE part of college football, and it helps that Chizik knows Auburn and the state of Alabama. Auburn doesn't recruit nationally with the likes of USC, ND, FLORIDA, but what Auburn can do is recruit top hs seniors in state. Gill does not know Auburn. He's a Nebraska Man. I could go on and on and on as to why Chizik is the better fit at Auburn than Gill. Look past the numbers from the last two years. Its very simple people. Did race play a part in the hiring? Maybe, I can't definitively answer yes or no. Can you? But what I CAN definitively answer is that yes, Turner Gill is the "hot" coaching candidate, but at Auburn, Chizik is by far the better fit. Now if only Mike would do a little research before spewing verbal nonsense like Sir Charles.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

What a bunch of crap. Because we all know this could never happen in a blue state. It's those uneducated white trash inbred bafoons from the south who keep racism alive. Give me a break! The facts are that racism is still alive in America. And it's not limited to white people only, racism exist in every race. The University of Auburn is free to hire and fire anyone they wish. Debate the qualifications of each individual instead of the color of their skin. This is precisely what MLK said in his famous speech. Racism is alive and well mostly because the media, Charles Barkley, and many others don't want it to die. Good luck to the next Auburn football head coach, because it appears most people don't feel you deserved it based solely on your race. Personally, I think the bigger issue may have been the ability to recruit players. However, it's foolish to believe we live in a color-blind society.

Auburn's not color-blind when hiring coaches

I would agree with what everyone is saying if Auburn was looking for another defensive coordinator. Auburn needed/needs a coach. If you make the Buffalo coach white there is no one in their right mind that could say with a straight face and a clear conscience that he wouldn't have been picked. Let's face it, blacks have to work a little harder and in some cases alot harder to to recieve the same recognition as their white counterparts. I am a man of logic and there is no logical explanation for this. Numbers don't lie... People do. Production is/should always the underlying factor in hiring for these type positions. If you don't understand why people are playing the race card??? Write down all of Coach Gil's and Chizik's accomplishments as ***(((COACHES)))**** and show them to random people. I guarantee 10 out of 10 times that random person will pick Coach Gil. Imagine if it were you and you were trying to provide a better life for your family and this guy gets picked over you. Wouldn't you be outraged??? Put yourself in his shoes. Would you say "yeah he was a good defensive coordinator and he was already with Auburn" YEAH RIGHT!!!
