The guy played 21 minutes and you already ripping him and it's obvious from your comments that ur bias against soccer(football) but give the guy a chance and once he's healthy and playing 90 minutes then we will judge him accordingly. But for you to do so based on 21 minutes and him taking off his shirt is plain pathetic. Go ahead, watch Michelle Wie miss cuts. But he's never been -- and never will be -- a truly world class footballer.

Also, there are many players already playing in the MLS who are better footballers than Beckham.

But, in the shadow of Barry Bonds' pharmo-record, can we ever truly believe that American sports fans care anything for talent and sporting ability?

How many linebackers do anything even vaguely interesting in an NFL game? And what's the difference between Donovan McNabb throwing one more horrible pass and any footballer passing a ball rather than scoring a goal?

Nobody can say that the NFL games leave anyone giddy with excitement (between constant stoppages and Viagra ads.)

Indeed, the major reason for the NFL's TV success (and that's the measure of success for sports in the US, not the actual number of people playing those sports, which is led by TA! DA! soccer.) is that most of an NFL team's positions can be comfortably filled by fat people, thus indulging the fantasies of the NFL's equally fat spectators that one day they, too could (or could have been) a pro "athlete."

And don't get me started with baseball. At least in soccer everyone keeps moving. In baseball the only things moving most of the time are the players saliva glands.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Give the guy time to recouperate and stop berrating and belittling his impact. I am a soccer fan, and would like to see the domestic game improve. Everyone should watch the US/Mexico tourney, Superliga 2007, underway right now, that has shown the potential of what could and should become MLS play. That said Becks is the wrong superstar to bring to the USA. Instead, a ridculus amount of money should have brought Christian Ronaldo to L.A. that would put the MLS in national sports news, but not just for his good looks, but for stupifing moves that after seeing a few times, might just give a viewer reason to pause and watch next time the saw the L.A. kits on screen.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Um, I read the article, and it is NOT an 'attack' on Mr. Beckham. The author admits to watching AND liking soccer...so what if David Beckham didn't 'ask' for the attention.....he's not out there telling the press to stop writing about him for every bowel movement he has either.

The author of the piece was attacking the PRESS <AP> for their inane coverage of Mr. Beckham, not his undeniable skills as a player.

Geez....read the text next time and stop letting emotions determine your responses.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

"Nicely Done!" Any sport where fans clap and yell 'Nicely done' and 'excellent cross' is just a step over from PoLo without the pony.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I thought Becks elevated the level of play on the Galaxy side for the short time he was on the field. This shows great promise for the team and soccer in America. I hope our young players going to europe will come home after no more than 2 years and raise the level of play. But writers really do need to stop trashing the game, but at least that is publicity........

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Let's see...no sexual abuse allegations, obviously no steroids, no dog fighting, no murders, no drugs, no DUIs...no way this guy qualifies as an American sports hero. Needless to say I am a soccer fan.

With that said I completely agree with Mike, Beckham is completely over hyped. Yes Beckham is a legend and deserves the title as well. His record in the Premier League is incredible. He truly is the “Michael Jordan” of soccer (i.e. great talent, well marketed and good personality). However Beckham is on the down slope of his career, he was kicked off the UK national team last year. Real Madrid was delaying his contact renewal. He is not the same player as he was earlier in his career. He is equivalent to Michael Jordan during his Wizard days.

It’s obvious there is interest in seeing him play, but people’s attention span is short. I've been playing and watching the game for decades and we all know that American soccer is a peculiar beast. In other words, something exciting [e.g. goals] has to happen for people to get excited. That's why FIFA changed the rules on offsides being even. That said, Beckham's debut here has been a great big yawn. It will be interesting to see how he does when his foot gets better. Perhaps it should say, "off-base." Your account of Beckham's performance is clearly from someone who doesn't understand the game. Maybe you should have mentioned how the Galaxy instantly seemed more organized and composed the second Beckham stepped on the field, or the brilliant pass to Donovan, or the amazingly perfect kick to Pavon who couldn't put in the header. Those are the things that enable teams to get goals and prevent the opponent from scoring, and are just as crucial as the goal itself. Why not help educate people about the game and enlighten peolple about what to look for in a player, like the seemingly (to you) small things Beckham did yesterday, rather than rant about trivial things like you have? Could it be because you don't have to make any effort that way?

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Good article, and I do agree that the Michelle Wie analogy is completley wrong. The quality of MLS is improving and it is normal for those who despise the game to be afraid.
Why will soccer make it here? He is one of the best set up guys on the planet. His free kick into the goal square would have been in the back of the net in England or Europe. But in the US, the skill (and the understanding) is lacking to the point that it was hardly noticed. That's why he was so peeved after the kick - he knows that if he was at Real Madrid or at Man U, that's a goal. Give him a full game, and I guarantee you that he will play a part in at least one of the galaxy's goals that WILL be scored...Until then, just go back to being fat and watching baseball!

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I've been wondering when someone is going to notice that there's all this press about a guy who is doing NOTHING.

I'm so tired of hearing about him that I wish he would just go away.

Thanks for finally pointing out the obvious.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

seems like a fair piece, and i'm a soccer fan. beckham *did* ask for the attention when he signed the contract worth more than the rest of the MLS combined. and as for critics pointing out "he's only played 21 minutes - give him a break" that's the writer's point exactly: he's only played 21 minutes, give us a break until he does play 90 minutes. will he ever?

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Beckham, who is recuperating from an injury and has a history of playing hurt to help his team, probably should not have played but did so anyway, when his team looked in trouble and was even a man down. David Beckham is front page news because of the amount of money LA spent to bring him to the States and join the Galaxy, not to mention his decorated career. It's going to be a long time before any American team gets complete world notice, it's not going to happen immediately on his first game. And how is it a problem that he's more of a setter than a scorer? Everyone has their own specific assignment in soccer which makes it truly a team sport, the whole of which is greater than the sum of its parts. Everyone else might, for a short time, but they'll be bored if they don't understand the game. MLS has tried to imitate Pro Wrestling or Nascar and throw some character flare in to spice it up. No matter how you slice it, Beckham playing his first game, whether as a starter or substitute, is worthy of lead story status.

And the value of that lead story status for American soccer is, in my opinion, the ability to give occasional and willing fans, such as the author, an easily accessible oppurtunity to learn the ins and outs of the game and get past the only-goals-are-exciting mindset.

My hope is that as Major League Soccer grows and the U.S. National Teams fare well in World Cups, more people will be come to pick up on the subtleties that comprise the beautiful game. I thought Beckham's performance was admirable. Nursing an injury, with his team down a goal and a man, he entered the game and proceeded to give his team a chance.

So even if you didn't see it Mike, trust me, Beckham did more than just show up.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

"It used to be that you had to do something to merit a lead story on the sports page"

Thats pathetic that you say that, the guy has done plenty (on and off the field) to deserve front page news attention. If you think that the debut of one of the worlds biggest sports stars isn't worth making the headlines, you should not be writing about sports.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I totally agree with you. I have been a soccer fan since I was a kid and my dad used to take me and my brother to the soccer games in my country of origin. Beckham has been blown out of proportion by the media and by the clubs he's been with because he sells a lot of jerseys. He is no ronaldinho nor messi. If the US soccer league wants to promote and establish itself as a reputable league within the US public it has to bring players that will recognized by their performance inside the field. Beckham is a great soccer player, but, he's also past his prime. Soccer in American has not "arrived" just because Beckham has come to the MLS

While I agree, nobody said it was supposed to. Not the MLS or the fans at least. It is only really ESPN and writers like you that are putting far too much emphasis on the arrival of one guy.

2. Beckham hasn't done anything useful and therefore you are uninterested in the sport and in Beckham. Plus, the Galaxy lost.

This is by far the most ridiculous point of your article. You are bashing the guy for not scoring or making something happen for the 15+ minutes he was on the field. You don't even mention the fact that he came on just after the Galaxy lost a man to go 10 versus 11. You also don't mention that he completely took control of his team once he stepped onto the pitch and set up three plays that could easily have been goals if his teammates were even slightly more competent.

3. If Beckham doesn't score goals, the casual viewer won't be interested.

This is probably true. But that same viewer probably wouldn't be captivated by anything less than complete and total domination of the league by Beckham. People who enjoy sports and enjoy competition will eventually make a decision on whether or not they like the game. Many already have. If they do decide they like the game, good for them. If not, they won't watch. The important thing is that the MLS is doing enough to make its fans happy and more and more people are starting to enjoy the product that they put out.

It is clear that you are upset about all of the hoopla surrounding Beckham which hasn't materialized into anything exciting on the field. I agree, but rather than bashing Beckham or the MLS, maybe you should point the finger at your own colleagues who are the culprits behind the over-exposure.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Mike Doe, N. And David, maybe not the best, but very reputable representative of this beautiful game, who played in such giants like MU and RM, is bringing a piece of real football atmosphere not to some Middle-Eastern or Japanese league where many aging stars tend to go, where he could be an idol and where he could receive comparable paychecks, but to the boring MSL where he is doomed to get such articles from people who call football "a worthy sport". When it came time to play a sport in school, I played soccer. My daughter saw the Women's team lead by Mia Hamm, and she too wanted to play soccer. And even though, when he was a baby, we cheered Alexi, Cobi, Tony, Marcelo and the guys on as far as they could go during the 94 world cup, I can't get my 13 year old son to touch a soccer ball, a sport that he could and would be great at. No, he is the shortest boy in his grade and wants to play basketball because that is where all the glory is per the sports media machine.

If Beckham coming to America draws enough media attention to get the kids to play soccer, and the yound adults to watch it, it is all worth it.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Imagine having to read a front-page column slamming a mega-hyped new baseball import (like Dice K)--judging him on 10 so-so pitches after coming back from injury--written by some guy who knew next to nothing about the sport and had "been to a World Series" once....does that contextualize this enough for your old-white-guy brain to understand how ridiculous you sound?

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Did you even watch the game? Beckham is a legendary global sports figure who has been playing professionally for more than 15 years during which time he's won the Premiership (6 times), the FA Cup, Champions League and La Liga. He was also captain of England's national team for 58 World Cup matches. Him playing in America, or anywhere for that matter is a big deal. The MLS may just have a chance with his kind of star power, even if it doesn't work for you. Just come out and say what you're really thinking: that you wish you were as fit, successful and good looking as he is and that your wife was a smoking hot Spice Girl and get it over with.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

First off, players often change into their game jerseys shortly before coming on, especially when it's raining out, for what I hope are obvious reasons. Second, you missed that within 10 minutes of coming on, playing a man down, on a suspect ankle in driving rain, he nearly put Landon Donovan through with a pinpoint ball from 50 yards. That's what Beckham can do. It was an exciting taste of things to come I think.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

M. I like you "no bull" approach. I am european and quite familiar with soccer and Beckham. Anyone who knows soccer knows that David Beckham was not brought to LA to win anything other than some new interest in the sport. He's not really an elite player and never has been. He's a good soccer player who has made the most of his soccer talents and then some. Soccer is a business like all major sports and Beckham has benefitted from his good looks and charm as much as his soccer ability since he can sell almost anything. I'd be willing to bet that the LA Galaxy sell more jerseys than any other U.S. soccer team. Bottom line is that Beckham will bring money and attention to the sport in the U.S. for a while and hopefully maintain some interest long enough to have a lasting effect. Let's face it. Most people have favorite sports based on the athletes personalities so it's a matter getting people interested in the players as much as the sport.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Give me a break Mike. Write about stuff you actually know about. As far as I can tell, this is an article about an article about an event you didn't even witness. And you can identify with soccer fans because you watched the whole final of the last world cup? That's like watching the last game of World Series and calling yourself a baseball fan.

What exactly would you do if you were a marketing exec at MLS? Oh, I forgot, you don't actually have to DO anything - just criticize what everybody else does. Congrats on a job well done.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Yes I am going to chew your head off for blaming Beckham, not because you don't understand soccer or anything like that. Look at the evidence...

Runner up for FIFA World Player of the Year (twice!), three world cups (scoring in all three), UEFA Champions League winner, seven times winner of the two toughest leagues in Europe (and probably the world). Even at 32 you only need to read reviews of his performances over the last 6 months with Real Madrid to see he is quality.

I also agree that Cristiano Ronaldo is an amazing player, however at 22 no amount of money will bring him to the US. However, if Beckham is successful in building the profile of the MLS then maybe in a few years the league will start attracting young players of the quality of Ronaldo. And I sincerely hope it does.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I like how the first two comments were predicted by the author. lolz

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

What as opposed to all the hype TO got last year on Dallas for dropping the most balls in the NFL?

Is it possible that older sportswriters only refuse to buy the hype in sports they don't care to write about, e.g. soccer. Seems a lot of writers bought the Wie hype for a long time, so why not give Beckham a full game before you trash him. After all, he did help Real Madrid win this year, so he's not that bad!

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Why don't you write something when you have something intelligent to say. I'll be watching soccer. Let us know...

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I am a HUGE soccar fan, but the whole Beckham thing is a farce. It's this same mentality that is obviously drafted in your so-called editorial. For a journalist, I'm actually sort of taken aback by the shoddy writing. You're basing one man's career within a 20-minute window. Seriously. Just because Beckham didn't do some crazy bicycle kick and score three goals in the game - you automatically crucify him. Your ignorance for the game is apparent. Your lack of research and sort of snooty attitude is an exact reflection on most of the sports writers in the United States. Beckham isn't God. He's taken a risk, leaving a league that adored him, where he could have continued to stay in the lime-light of European and World Soccer/Football - but he chose to come to America. Not to bury himself as a mediocre player amongst other mediocre players... but to give the most watched single sport a chance in the USA. Perhaps you should continue writing about Women's Golf... since that tends to be your main focus of attention at this time anyway.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Interesting reading your comments on Becks...I am a lifelong MAN UNITED fan living in Manchester and have seen him play live more times than i care to mention.Watching yesterday evening was a little uncomfortable and this wasn`t altogether Beck`s fault.Beckham cam what`s that all about,i`m sure i was not the only English viewer cringing everytime we watched him have a sip of drink, then another and maybe given time actually finish a cup.Though seriously Beckham to us Man United fans will always remain that young lad who wanted to play for us,managed to make that dream come true and ultimately played his best football for us.Good luck to him in the US...i`m sure he`ll need it but at least he doesn`t have to pick the ball up to control it

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Now that the author has taken a swipe at soccer I guess I should give him a piece or two of my mind about 'their football' and how it fares against the real football (soccer). In the real sense this game IS FOOTball, because it is played by mostly kicking the ball, and NOT by throwing by hand, catching it or running holding it. And it is the game for real people, and common people, who sweat out for 90 minutes straight. (Just look at how popular this game is getting among school-going kids.)It is not some overly hyped one man show created for enactment between commercial breaks. There is more involvement by everybody in the TEAM, than the domination by one guy who throws the ball being protected by half dozen 300lb fat-a$$es, who otherwise, as in, in real world are as good as disabled creatures with some serious health problems. Ask your best players -- quarterbacks, runningbacks & safeties (I am not even talking about linesmen) to be on the field for 90 minutes without substitutions, timeouts, official review timeouts, injury timeouts and heaven's sake commercial breaks... If at least 10% of them survive a season then we will continue the argument. I am a soccer and fan and love playing the game, but America will never truly understand it. Beckham will never change anything. BEckham is beter off in REal MAdrid than on MLS teams. MLS is just not fun to watch. ITs boring. But I must admit it will be fun to see what Beckham has under his cleats to show for America. Football isn't about fat guys going into jerseys to make everyday people think they can play. First of all, any sport is extrememely difficult to play in the professionals. If it was all you say it is, why arent you out there playing and making millions? Football is about the American determination that shaped this country. Sure you dont have to prance around for 45 minutes at a time, but you do have to have to sprint for a 99 yard touchdown run after getting hit by guys like Brian Urlacher. If i saw Ronaldo or whoever do that, maybe I would give a damn about American soccer. There is no toughness factor in soccer. I have seen so many fake injuries and girly cringes that it makes me sick. Men should not cry on the field if they slip over ones foot. Maybe that is why Americans dont appreciate it. Americans like tough guys who are willing to put it all on the line(Brett Favre--the original iron man). And when I see a soccer player bench 225 43 times, or squat over 800 lbs., I will watch all of his matches and go to the game naked.
Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Actually, this article is not directed against Beckham (or just a wee bit with the jersey story) but more at those who are building the hype and who, even remotely observing, appears to lack clearly of any understanding of the sport. While not a big fan of Beckham, he's pretty good at what he's supposed to do which does not equals to running around doing spectacular moves and netting loads of goals but setting goals, that is getting himself & the ball at the right place and the right moment so that others can score. Reporting on how he put on his shirt and made a few runs on the field won't help newcomers understand that. With all that's being said, they are more likely to expect him to stroll through the opposition's defense and show off some classy finishing moves. The author is right. They'll be disapointed.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

If he makes as much as "a-rod", then maybe he should be scrutinized/criticized, booed, cheered, jeered like "a-rod" And if he doesn't play, is he worth the salary??? America is already seen to the rest of the world as a country who has no history of football and never will have a future. Yes, Beckham has been at the top of his career for 10 years but for those past 10 years he's played more than 21 mins of the game. He sits on the sideline of most games with a smirk on his face because he knows he's getting paid MUCH more than the MLS players with talent. Donovan and Jones have just as much talent as Beckham but they're being shadowed by a sell-out now.
As for the publicity...he asked for it. He does more endorsements than any other footballer. His wife had a TV show about them coming to America, and when he comes to a LA game he has a "beckham cam" on him for the 70 mins he sitting on the bench. (you're telling me he didn't have any say-so in these decisions).
He's getting publicity that he doesn't deserve. If you're in the sport for the love of the game and not the publicity, you should be on the pitch for longer than 21 mins! Personally I wish he'd be sent home and if you must bring in a foreign player...bring one with talent and not one that has one skill on the pitch (bending penalty shots).

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

This Mike Celizic is the REAL snoozer.
He has no concept about the game and what it is sad that
this pseudo sports fan gets pay to write about a subject that he is pathetic ignorant.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

John B. Beckham is an icon for England in the most popular sport in the world. Perhaps you do not grasp the concept but I will explain it to you. Soccer is the sports international language as much as English is the world's lingua franca. That means that without speaking a common language you can meet an African, a Latin American, a European, an Arab, an Asian and play soccer. What does that have to do with Wie. She is in a small little galaxy away from this.
Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the US among kids. It is not far from taking its right place in the American sports scene.
I could feel it in the stadium last night. It is getting close. Nothing can compare to the passion you feel in a soccer field and a soccer stadium and many people who went to the stadium out of curiosity are starting to find out.
Further, DC United as well as other clubs have a nice core fan base, soccer style, that is fans that sing the whole game. That is also a sign that the passion is there, it just needs to get extended to other people.
It is great to have Beckham but wouldn't it be nice to have a couple of big stars per team. I would buy season tickets right away(right now I have a package to watch Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Barros Schelotto and Juan Pablo Angel.

I think fans just need the prospect of magic every Sunday to be won by the game. Nice to have him here, but I hope we soon settle into looking for what he can contribute, not how well he shows his (as some of the women at RFK put it) "cute butt" and abs. He's coming to help draw some attention to the game from some people who might not otherwise expose themself to the beautiful game. That's it.
It's YOU sir, and others in the media, who claim he's supposed to be the sport's savior. YOU set him up, so that YOU have the joy of knocking him off the perch that only YOU and the rest of your media colleagues put him on. Wow. Does that make you feel all tingley to be able to do that??
MLS is doing quite well actually. It was before Becks arrived. Four or five national TV deals. Several soccer specific stadiums up to maximize the capture of revenue stream at matches. Major advertising deals. Millions of revenue generated from player transfers. Investors with some of the deepest pockets in worldwide sports. Here in DC TV ratings are higher for United than for either the Wizards or the Caps. And maybe the Nats but I have to check on that this year. And viewership numbers are growing in virtually every other MLS market.

I'd say we're just fine with or without Beckham.
I have zero respect for you sir, and I hope other readers of this blog will join me in reminding you that you don't deserve your job. Objectivity is job one in journalism. Where'd yours go?

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I'm appreciative that Beckham is here and is willing to give a shoulder to the U.S. effort. I would encourage the writer of this article, Mr. Celizic, to refrain from working against Beck's efforts, and give the guy a chance to lift America's spirits before dumping the cold water of a jealous greybeard media hack onto our guest from abroad. After seven years of headlines full of George Bush and the war in Iraq, Americans can certainly use an anti-depressant.

The sight of a talented and sexy footballer donning and doffing a soccer jersey on American soil, is pleasing on my female retina, and seems to stimulate this woman's visual cortex sufficiently that I'll be sure to watch Beckham again. A sight of Beckham's chest on an American soccer field works a helluva lot better than a bottle of Prozac!

As a third-generation German-American, I welcome the pitch from Europe, and look forward to an interesting MLS season that, without Beckham's presence, would likely otherwise go undetected on the U.S. media radar. My German grandfather, who came to Chicago in 1924 and used to play for SV 07 Elversberg in the Saar, and my grandmother's family, who started the club SC Hassel 1919 eV that fed into Gelsenkirchen, would certainly be cheering Beckham on, were they alive today.

I thank Mr. Beckham for coming to the States.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

The MLS is just a retirement home for players (foreign)who have already past their prime. A thousand Beckhams will not make soccer a popular sport in the us. I love soccer, I've been watching it since the Bruce Murray and Steve Trittschuh day, and I think Mr. Celzic is right on. Good commentary. Accomplishment deserves notice. However, related to my second point, what is so great about putting a ball in a net? or hitting a ball over a fence? or knocking a ball into a hole? What is that so impressive to so many people? Even if Mr. Beckham does to some "great" things on the pitch, so what! Give Mother Teresa her due and accolades (because, to her credit, she never cared about anyone's accolated anyway), but, even if he eventually did do "amazing" things on the field, even then why does that merit a lead story in a newspaper?

2. I, for one, hope that soccer doesn't "make it big." It is absolutely idiotic that someone should make millions of dollars a year playing a game. Society's priorities are way off. I am perfectly content having no games on TV, no million dollar contracts, no $30 game tickets, and no David Beckhams. If you want to watch your local team, go see them in person. If it has to be broadcast, put is on public access or set up a web broadcast. Sorry to be an old kermudgen who idealistically dreams of a world with unskewed priorities, but I would much rather see all sports leagues--NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB, PGA--become less popular, less important to people, less rich, and less time consuming than see another sports league rise to their level. I like sports. I'm 33 and I still play on a soccer team. Diversion has its place - but that place isn't (or shouldn't be) at the top. I guess I'm just cynical that anything good comes from professional sports and a lot of good could come from people redirecting the energy, passion, and resources that they have for sport toward the betterment of society.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Beckham should get a few more games until he is judged but, I agree he does have a few valid points in the article. New Soccer/Football fans are going to be looking at what the fuss is about. And if all they see is the man taking off his shirt and taking some kicks they will not be impressed. You only get one chance to make a good impression, so hopefully he picks it back up to his A game jah?

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I am sorry, but Michelle Wie had to win at least something in her career, even if not pro, but what about Anna korniakova. What has she won on her own to deserve as much press as she has?

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

you are right about everything Gary......who the hell is Mike Celizic to talk about Beckham....he is just another ingnorant, close minded person that has never traveled around the world....

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

I supposed you'd have ripped Jordon if he had gone to Italy at the hight of his career and had to miss a couple games 'cuz he was injured too.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

My advice: Only write about games you have actually watched.

As a soccer (Football) fan, I was there at his debut against Chelsea and I watched his MLS debut on TV. If anyone deserves criticism, it's the press, who not surprisingly focus entirely on the spectacle of one of the world's most popular athletes and virtually ignore the details of the game. It's hard to blame the press for being star-struck. Even his remark about the artificial turf was spot on.

All athletes get injuries, so why are sportswriters complaining about his injury rather than all those on the baseball's DL or NFL's training camp mishaps? His past accomplishments speak for themselves. When he is fit, he is still THE potent set piece player that makes things happen. A true football fan will know what he is worth, and will be patient (and excited) to see him play.

Have a look at the English Premier League sometime to see a truly professional, very international and highly competitive sporting arena. The best in the world. That's where Beckham honed his craft, along with Spain's La Liga the last few years.

America's obsession with gridiron football and baseball is understandable, given the history, but as far as highly skilled and fit athletes...I don't think so.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Yet another sports dinosaur spouting off about how a sport that is mainstream in this country will never be mainstream in this country. When will soccer be popular in the US? When guys like this guy are dead or no longer employed.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Alex Smithson, V. This writer used to write for The Times or The Daily Telegraph or something and he was a bit of a joke in England we all just though he knew little about sport in general. And rounded off things in an out-of-date very old-fashioned irrelevent views. With all due respect to American sport the fact that the guy is saying about making headlines for doing something worthwile is a joke. Beckham has won numerous Premier League trophies (the best league in the world) and a European trophy which is like winning your world series but harder because they don't just use teams from one country. I love American sport but a lot of your headlines go to scandals. The N.B.A. thing that's blown up today. The fact that Barry Bonds record is compromised through Asterix. Lance Armstrong. Did he take drugs? Didn't he? I mean your sport is filled with headlines for the wrong reasons. It isn't exaclty Beckhams' fault that he's injured you idiot man. He is still a great player not one of the worlds best anymore but still capable of competing with the best and he's not exactly going to risk his England future by sustaining a long-term injury just for playing Major Leugue Soccer. He is an international star and your country has decided to hyoe him to the max. That is not his fault. He is a good footballer and really just wants to get fit and playing. Do you not think he wants to make headlines for being great. Sir, I think your article is appaling and out-dated and your own insecurties show through by the fact that you spent half the article defending yourself not just purely standing by your point of view. Now that he has played just over 90 minutes he happens to have a goal and an assist plus a win. Seems like everybody should just have a clue, maybe try some of the other sports (at a decently competative level) and then spout off. I have played many sports in my life and found them all to have certain aspects that set them apart from the others and make them all challenging. Have a clue people

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Hey there Mike...just thought I would drop another line and ask if you watched the Galaxy game last night...I am sure you know Beckam assisted in three goals during their instant classic 5-4 loss to NY last night. There were 66,000 plus folks on hand to see the game. So let's have another re-cap...in two starts, the man you said will probably do nothing has a goal and four assists. Do you still think that is not an impact? I have to admit, gloating about being right is not my thing but I can't help but go back and read your article and laugh. I suggest you re-read it and remind yourself that you have no clue what you are talking about.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Mike, I don't ever agree with you, but you got this one half right. Beckham is paid for his looks, not his scoring. Soccer fans know it but just won't admit it. But soccer is based on pretense anyway (note the fall downs whenever someone barely touches the pansies), so why admit to it, aye?

As for Michelle Wie, she is good but needs a new manager besides her dad. Tiger slumped too, remember? Also, Michelle has no contract, so she has absolutley zero to live up to except for the galactic expectations heaped upon her by non athletic sports writers like yourself.

Beckham is a soccer snoozer

Beckham proved you flat wrong, looked at what he did at Red Bulls game.
