I’ve not had a great deal of success. It’s too numbing of mind and spirit.

In addition Wikipedia adds "On August 2, 1979, he was practicing takeoffs and landings in his new Cessna Citation I/SP jet at the Akron-Canton Regional Airport. On the third touch-and-go, Munson failed to lower the flaps for landing and allowed the aircraft to sink too low before increasing engine power, causing the jet to clip a tree and fall short of the runway. The plane then hit a tree stump and burst into flames, killing Munson (who was trapped inside) and injuring two other companions."

Referencing the first quote, this wouldn't come accross as "thug behaviour" or sophmoric or even stupid. Referencing the second quote, Munson made a mistake, something that pilots do from time to time, but thankfully very infrequently.

Your brief portrait of Munson wrongfully includes him with the bozos that embrace the type of idiotic behaviour prevelant today in professional and amateur sports.

With due respect sir, you are wrong. Flying a jet in order that he could see his family is hardly the mindset of the others listed in your article.

This isn't apples and oranges, it isn't even remotely related.

Larry Finley
Colorado Springs, CO

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

The best commentary I've seen thus far. Thank you Mike.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

The best commentary I've seen thus far. Thank you Mike.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

Thank you. Finally, a rational thought.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

A. But the only person Ben Roethlisberger put at risk was himself. It is certainly possible that he chose not to wear is helmet out of laziness, or maybe it was uncomfortable - but not necessarily to "show what a tough guy he was." And even if that was his motive, it is several orders of magnitude less risky than "being a thug."

Thurman Munson was flying in his plane WITH HIS INSTRUCTOR. I'm sure you've flown in an airplane with a pilot. Was that pilot just trying to show how tough he was? Why shouldn't Thurman Munson be able to learn that skill?

Josh Hancock is a little closer. While I doubt that he intended to harm anyone, driving while intoxicated certainly puts others at risk.

But when one waves guns around he either intends to kill someone or to give the appearance that he intends to kill someone. Lumping that into the same category as riding a motorcycle without a helmet and calling it risky behavior is like labeling both a walk down the street and a trip to Mars as travel.

This is not a case of different cultures either, such as wearing cornrows or a purple suit or having gold plated rims installed on your hummer. Sean Taylor was smart enough to know that this type of behavior is wrong. I'm sure the person who killed him knows that as well, yet both decided to live that type of lifestyle. There are many people who are not black who also choose that type of lifestyle. And there are many young black men who grew up in conditions much worse than Sean Taylor who don't engage in that type of behavior. While I know very little about Sean Taylor's father other than that he is a police chief, I suspect he was a bad father. I suspect the same is true of Andy Reid. And if his sons don't change, they may some day suffer the same fate as Taylor.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

I'm sorry, but blaming young male athletes, which is what you are doing, is absurd (I am not one, or at least not a young male). Should we force all young males to take estrogen? Are all motorcyclists, shooters, and pilots daredevils and barnstormers? Of course not! I would agree that today's young super athlete is coddled beyond his own good and therefore developes a warped view of his world and society in general. I would further stipulate that the rampant use of steroids (And I know there is no reason to believe that to be a factor here.) heightens the problem. Is it any different than the old woman who, unthinkingly, jaywalks and gets hit by a car? Poor judgement there as well. And when I say some I mean white. It's as if because he was a black male and one who wasn't a David Robinson clone that he not only deserved what happened to him but that all his life amounted to was fulfilling a violent prophecy. Words carelessly yet automatic such as thug were thrown around and judgements on his life, his personality and his worth as a human were made and it was interesting that in all that, not much sympathy was given towards his family or the fact that he not only was valued by his team as a member but more of a person who was also changing his life, but that he was a father. For some it wasn't surprising that his life ended and perhaps in the way that it did, but for me it wasn't surprising that his death garnered such ugliness from 'some' people.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

This is the most sensible column about this tragedy I've have read, yet.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

Amen to all that. Great column.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

Joshua Makori, E. Successful black players find it difficult to leave their old dangerous ghetto liasons behind. I guess it is an education issue; these guys are recruited before they even know how to spell their names properly!! (no pun intended). What do you expect? This is a man who at age 24, had turned his life around. I'm sorry if everyone cannot walk the high and mighty at age 21-23?

But this man was not at a nightclub throwing the deuce sign up. This man was not gangbanging in the streets of Miami. This man was in his own home, minding his own business when this senseless crime occured. It's time to put the pens down gents and stop pointing the finger at the victim.

Would you have sang the same tune if it was Michael Jordan or Tom Brady? It made me reflect on some of the risky behaviors I engaged in in my past. It all comes down to people learning that you can't do whatever you want to do whenever you want to. There are rules that must be followed. And the rules are for your own good. It is far better to have young males suffer the consequences of not following the rules as children rather than progressing through life believing that they do not have to follow the rules and suffering far greater or more tragic consequences as young adults. We do not help children by giving them avenues to avoid the consequences of their actions. And failing to learn that everyone must follow the rules.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

I'm not buying all the B.S. that Mike Celizic is putting out. It sounds like Taylor was just another NFL thug.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

God rest his soul, and bring peace and understanding to his family, friends, teammates, and all the fans dealing with this tragic loss.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

I've been trying to understand this for the same number of days as you Sir. I thought I couldn't, because I'm a 43 year old white guy.

But your words here, and the words of Michael Wilbon today, have helped me. I still don't really understand it, but I'm getting there.

What I wish I could figure out now is how to stop it from happening over and over again.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

it was reported that there was a prior burglary a week ago and a knife was left on Taylor's bed. I teach kids with special needs at a DC-metro area school. My students are older, almost all are black, and this tragedy has been at the forefront of their conversations. How often I hear the words, "(I got in trouble) only because I am black!" How often I say, "That is an excuse for not making a change in your behavior... after all, you can't change your color. Seeing the dramatic consequences of decisions made of years past. There is no clear explaination or reasoning we as a public can understand. Only thing to relize is just the flaw in human nature. Many people with vast riches or fame all of a sudden become targets or the third cousin from the second sister from the mother's fathers side who needs to help. Jealousy, envy, rage, all which isn't avoidable when your name is associated with money and success, especially if that where close to you feel left behind. For you to even say something stupid about maybe its a black thing, or where he lives, your house can get broken into no matter what time or what day it is. The man loved and he was proud of where he was from, most kids like Sean Taylor will never make it but he came home to give people like myself hope, yeah he had the money to move in a big house in a better neighborhood, but thats where he wanted to be...Sean Taylor is a person i looked up to because i play safety also for a semi-pro team in Orlando called the orange county falcons, and i wear the number 26 because of him. People can bad mouth Sean because he had an attitude problem,or he broke some laws/rules to play safety you have to be tough, that's why he was feared on the field, and loved off of it. (R.I.P. Sean did not speak to the media often as we know, but even so I have still heard that those that did speak with him, found him to be humble and extremely polite and pleasant. I wish people would stop making him out to be something that he apparently was not.

Thanks again!

RIP Sean.. you are deeply missed

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

I agree with what many others here have said. This was an excellent article about a senseless act of violence and the culture of young men. Everywhere. Young men everywhere are in a state of crisis to everyone's detriment.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

Not a single reporter or commentator has noticed a very obvious discrepancy in the information being made public...the people arrested say that they did not go Taylor's house to kill him, just to rob him. They thought the house was empty. If this is true, why did they bring a gun...why bring a gun to rob an empty house???????

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

When you embrace the thug life and something tragic like this happen, people automatically think the worst. This very well may be a case of a burgalary gone bad but because of the tone set by today's hip-hop culture, and the embracing of the lifestyle by today's young Black athletes, it's not hard for people to come to a negative conclusion. No matter, it is still a tragic loss of a young life.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

W. At what point do you take responsibility for your own actions. The choice to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, or fly a jet or even to drink and drive, does not in any way shape or form, equate with being a "thug." There is nothing illegal in most states, about riding a motorcycle without a helmet or flying a jet. These behaviours aren't close to the same as going out with the intent to commit a crime, buy illegal drugs; use guns or other weapons to intimidate or hurt someone; rape, rob, burglarize; or brutalize.

QUIT MAKING EXCUSES FOR THESE BEHAVIOURS - THAT ISN'T KNEE JERK, IT'S REALITY.

Your comparison is sad. Your view point is ridiculous. You say the gunmans action is reasonable. But how is it ever reasonable to enter another persons home without permission, ESPECIALLY WHILE ARMED? IT IS A CRIME!! The gunman or gunmen do not get to claim self defense - they were there to commit a crime. I personally think that when you kill someone in a commission of a crime - whether that was your intention or not - you should be charged with first degree murder AND FACE THE DEATH PENALTY. If you don't want to face that possibility - DON'T DO THE CRIME IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I hope these young men all do SERIOUS time - 25 years or more. I don't care that they are black. And I don't care that the victim was famous or black. These men killed a man, in his own home with his child and girlfriend both right there, while they were in the commission of a felony.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE. OR IN THIS CASE 4 EYES FOR AN EYE.

Don't be knee-jerk about Taylor's death

John.
